Engineering jobs in Cyprus??

Postby martinsbox » Fri Jun 29, 2007 11:04 am

Hi,
First time for me posting on this forum . . . hope my spellings and punctuations up to scratch!!
I've been pondering for some time now, about looking for work in Cyprus, as this is where my wife and I would love to live. Being in our late 40's, we would need to work to live there though. The only trouble is that I only really know engineering, having served my apprenticeship in milling. Are there any areas, coast-wise where engineering is more widespread or are most businesses located nearer to Lefkosia.

Welcome to the forum!

I live in pafos, and it would appear that there are lots of small one man bands that do all types of engineering/welding/fabrication for peanuts.

I assume you're after factory based work? There isn't any industry in the area apart from an aluminium factory on the outskirts- I think they make windows etc, but not sure.

Pay would also be a BIG problem, assuming you find a job in the first place. Wages here are terrible...

I don't want to put you off, but you need to be realistic...

Maybe someone else has better news

this is the main type of engineering jobs advertised in cyprus.
As a lift engineer in my early 40's i have already put out feelers & things are not to bad in that line as for your skills all i can say is if you want to live there do a lot of research first A LOT.

Not a lot of choice job-wise then, unless I become a one man operation. I can weld (stick & TIG), grind, turn, mill and do fitting, as well as sheet metal work. Never mind, only a few years before the mortgage is finally paid up. That will make things slightly easier.

I never take anything as being easy, that is why I thought it would be best to ask on this forum.

Perhaps Pafos is not the place for me to look for work. Although I love peanuts, you can't live on them!!

Anyway, thanks for your help and advice.

p.s. Just read these . . . But the most obvious thing I can think of is money. There is much more of it in the UK and generally you don't come to Cyprus for the career opportunities.
. . . .job pays 650 month  to start 38 hour week pay rise after training. (How does that compare to £2500 a month that I'm on over here in the U.K. ?)

It's not the career opportunities I'm after, it's the opportunity to live where the wife and I would love to live.
