Sorry TC! I just noticed your reply. Soon we might find out we are long lost relatives!
It was (and probably is) a very beautiful village. Being there, smelling the earth ovens smoke, listening to the sound of complete silence, and watching the waves in a sea of green created by the surrounding vineyards, gave me more pleasure than anything I enjoyed during the whole of my life!
Since I was a child, as soon as we turned off Pissouri into the narrow road leading to Alektora, my heart would start pumping like mad with excitement. It is a great treasure in that area, and yet no one else in this forum seems to have heard of or seen it! (even those who keep talking about parties in Pissouri)
Perhaps on my return to Cyprus we can arrange to go there together for a visit...
Was In Alektora 6 weeks ago, beautiful part of Cyprus and great views down to the sea. Went there to check the connecting road from Platanisteia to Ayios Thomas which is now tarmac.
Thanks for the reply kafenes!
I think I would have still preferred it when there was no asphalt and electricity going through the village. I found it very exciting with all the gas-lamps and torches - they gave a unique atmosphere to the homes and cafes at night. And riding on the back of a tractor along earth roads to vineyards was an adventure for a kid! (it was not until 1968 the RoC government decided to bring electricity and asphalt to Alektora and many other TC villages in the area)
I sometimes feel sorry for our children who will never get the chance to experience the kind of village life that existed in old Cyprus - much better than any camping expedition the young ones would enjoy to have!
