Yes Donna you are correct as long as the car has been registered in your name for a minimum 6 months, you pay no duty for your own use only but if you wish to sell it a few years down the line you will have to pay the duty due on it, the cheapest way to bring a vehicle to here is buy 2003 merc/bmw under 2000cc you'll recieve max discount on duties etc and you can resell at will.

To many questions need answered first of all and my space bar is sssssticking like hell,we have to talk first, but nearer the time, biggest problem is the stupid euro in January/feb 2008 and the fact customs are always changing the goal posts to make life difficult.

Dear Donna,

I'm a new member and am moving over to Cyprus in August with my family. I've made enquiries into taking a car over and will email you my home work were you can work out the cost of taking your car over. The info I in the email tells you how to calculate your Regiustration Fees and provides some useful numbers to call. In addition if you go onto the Cyprus Customs site (details in email) there is a table which you can download were you can work out exactly how much duty you will need to pay. In essence however if you are taking a small engined capacity car to cyprus it is best to pay the duty and registration costs as on average it shouldnt cost more that £500. and you can sell it without any restrictions. If on the other hand you want to take a newish 3 litre car over then its best that you claim duty exemption as the duty could amount to over £10K, although bear in mind that even if you claim exemption from duty registration costs still apply and could amount on a big engined car to a couple of thousand. Checkout my email and I hope it helps.
