There has obviously been a misunderstanding,t_c...
talip thought you were insulting him for calling him a LAZ (God knows why that would be an insult, but here we are....) It might have something to do with his lack of good command of English....But he is trying to bring a new angle onto our little problem/privilege....so why don't we give him a chance???

BK mate I had no problem with him and even though I had NO IDEA what he was talking about I thought Id say hello since I have loads of family around Trabzon and Kastamonu. I get really cranky sometimes...but yes...we have all sorts of views in this place and its good to have one more!

OK mate, just to get things cleared up. I just spoke with my aunt who told me Laz can mean 'stupid/dumb' so I suppose you deserve an apology. That is NOT what I meant though! People in Cyprus always call me Laz because my dad is from Kastamonu and I have even more family where you're from, Trabzon (Çarşıbaşı).

Sorry for what I said about your mother too, I just freaked out coz I was only saying hello and was happy to see someone from Trabzon but ended up having my own mother mentioned which really pissed me off, when I get defensive there is just no stopping me and I react in a way I later regret :? (and I do).

Özür Dilerim! :(

"Laz" is not an insult. They are believed to be an ethnic group that existed somewhere between Greece, Georgia, Nothern Anatolia and Armenia, but more towards Georgia. If I remeber correctly they were also known as "Colchis" (hence probably the source of the surname Kolchak in Turkey!

People living along the Northern Black Sea coast of Turkey had always been addressed as Laz by the general public, but the name became diluted when a lot of jokes were made referring to the occupants of that area as "Laz", that always portrayed them as "naive" or of little intelligence. But that is not something people believe in! It is only for jokes like the Irish jokes in UK. No one in real life really believes Irish are stupid, do they? My own experience has been, people referred to as Laz, or more appropriately as "Karadenizli" are very much loved and respected by the Turkish society in Turkey, and are never looked upon as a lower form of life in their midst!

Although TC did well to apologise, in my opinion he did nothing wrong and in fact, if anyone , it should be "talipozdemir" who should apologise for misinterpreting what was written and starting the first salvo of insults on someone who was genuinely welcoming him. That's my opinion anyway! :D

Talip Ozdemir, merhaba. I was just beginning to appreciate your post when you decide to rebuff someones greeting and mention his mother.. Very unTurkish or unIslamic, dont you think?

Maybe they should have equal representation in the govt so as not to be dominated by a majority that ridicules them...
