My Sunday Drive and Istinjo (pics)

Postby kafenes » Sun Jun 24, 2007 6:28 pm

As I hate the beach so the next best thing was to take a drive through the Paphos countryside with the wife and dog and take some pics. I also went through Bir's old village and took some pictures. Here they are:

Here's the village from a distance.

Some occupants of the village enjoying the shade, :)

The Mosque, the only thing still standing.

I will post some more pictures later tonight and a very interesting one from the village of Melandra.

Hi Kafenes,

My father-in-law is also from Istinjo - do I have your permission to save these pics onto my memory stick and take them round to show him ?

I can visualise his eyes watering when he sees these, just as they did a few years ago when his two brothers visited the village and captured some stuff on a camcorder for him to view - he watches this video more than any other TV show !

So there is a good chance he's related to Birkiprisli.

If you email me [email protected] I will send you these and more in full size (these were reduced quality for posting).

Kafenes , I'm pleased you visited Istinjo and took some photos , I also took some with my mobile phone but cant put on the forum since I lost my disc. The one of the house with the big door and the two windows , I stood out there for about 10 minutes and wondered if Bir would recognise the house. Could it have been a school ?
You must admit the scenery surrounding the village is stunning.

Looks like a place of worship. A Mosque?

Hi Kafene and thanks for the pictures.

Instinjo almost looks like the abandoned Ayios Sozomenos near Dali!
What was the population make up of Istinjo?

GR, according to a 1960 map I have the population then was 155 TCs. There was a cluster of TC villages surrounding a GC village, Philousa (population 220), Istinjo is one of them. I wonder if the surrounding land is still farmed. An abandoned village like this would make a really interesting restoration project, provided it could be acquired legally of course.

Kafenes, I have emailed you as requested.

As far as Birkibrisli and my father-in-law being relations, I have no idea. However I am sure that their families, if not related would certainly have known each other as the village was quite small from what I know. And if my memory of living in Cyprus back in the 70's is anything to go by, almost everyone knew someone that knows who you were talking about !!

I look forward to receiving your pics, and many thanks for posting these.

Jerry, the land around the village is farmed mainly wheat. A lot of olive trees as well but that's about it. As for restoration, it's too late, everything is beyond repair except the mosque which has been looked after and another house (looked not so old) and probably the shepherd living in it. There is no electricity, just water.
The perfect village for restoration would be the old Theletra which has been relocated after the earthquake.

Here are some more pics.

Ruins from Istinjo.

Another ruin from Istijo. Note the pebbled road.

Image

A stone bath from Peristerona village (mentioned this bath in another thread somewhere).

Image

View of Evretou dam.

Image

The most interesting of all. A church and a mosque virtually stuck together. Never seen this before. From the village of Melandra.
