Rehn warning to Turkey

By Angelos Marcopoulos

STRASBOURG - Turkey was warned bluntly by the EU's Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn that it must restore the Greek Cypriot refugees human rights by autumn if it wants to join the union.

"For a country to deserve candidate status it must respect human rights. This is a serious and important question,'' Rehn said in reply to my question on Turkey's obligation to respect the Greek Cypriot refugees' rights.

"`We are expecting concrete and convincing progress (on this) once a new (Turkish) government takes over in autumn. It is up to the next elected government to prove Turkey's capacity to join the EU on the basis of a determined policy of reforms guaranteeing respect for European values, with concrete results on the spot,'' he added.

Replying to another question on Turkey's persistent refusal to recognise Cyprus, Rehn said that "the normalisation of relations with all EU member states is an important element of accession negotiations.''
He added that in this respect "it is true that Turkey has not even started to normalise its relations with Cyprus, as it should, and we want its position on this point changed.''

Well now I have more respect for the EU and I believe that this is the appropriate approach to take. Now it is up to Turkey to decide whether or not she belongs in the club. It is also fair on turkey that she now knows what she needs to do.

Clear and transparent approach helps everyone.

Its obvious what Turkey is doing she will keep the EU dream alive and foreign investment interested but take no real measures towards "normalisation" until the EU keep their promises and open the route towards normalisation on the basis of give and take.

Pigeon English again , what do you mean by """""take no real measures towards "normalisation" until the EU keep their promises and open the route towards normalisation on the basis of give and take.""""""

So Turkey will take no real measures towards "normalisation " What does this mean.
Until you say, the EU keep their promise (what promise ) and open the route towards normalisation on the basis of give and take !!.What the hell does it mean. Do us a favour mate , we already know that whatever education you had in the UK it certainly was sub standard .Keep to the script at least this way we understand the points you are making.

Every other country in Europe had to fullfill the same conditions for membership why should Turkey have any concessions. I guess she can only stretch it so much before she pisses someone off and then its all over.

Viewpoint knows that the writing is on the wall, dear miltiades...That is why he is talking in riddles...Turkey will do everything possible to stay in Cyprus for as long as possible...When the only thing standing in her EU road is Cyprus,Turkey will do what is in Turkey's interest and pull her troops out of Cyprus, telling the puppet of the day to dismantle the trnc and get back to the officially agreed 1960 constitution...All Cypriot Turks (including VP and Zan) will uproot and take up residence in Turkey....End of story....And VP knows it too...

The concentration of so much power in the hands of certain individuals in the EU proved very catastrophic. The reason? These people use their power to get lubricated. Just like Verhoigen, Oli Rehn is actually asking for money. Turkey will do nothing before or after autumn, and surprise surprise Oli Rehn will do nothing as well. The reason? He will get his money and shut up....

This is how it works EVERYWHERE. A war of money and lubrication.

Well said Pyr ........ I couldn't put my finger on it about Rehn .... but your post has just verified my toughts about him. He is probably saying Thank God for the American dollar. I can now retire with money and power.

I do think thought hat Bir has a very valid oint .... the shameful thing is that Turkish speaking Cypriot of everyday life are going to pay the price for a few more years before, Turkey gives the order for re-establishment of 1960 Constitution.

no way will turkey recognise cyprus hell will freeze over before that happens...

i noticed president talat saying we are losing apettite for Eu Trying to make the Eu accept them without them recognising Cyprus or the human right laws.. and the south will do everything to keep turkey out of the eu

Things will stay as they are, I dont see aything changing. Turkey will not be joining Eu then they will care less for resoltion to cy they will have no reason to want to.
