SEVENTY per cent of people in Cyprus are optimistic about the future of the EU, according to the latest Eurobarometer carried out between April and May, which was made public yesterday in Brussels.
Furthermore the findings show Cypriots in favour of the further enlargement of the EU. Almost 90 per cent (87%) of people believe the problem of climate change demands an urgent shift in EU policy so carbon dioxide emissions are reduced by 2020.
Sixty-nine per cent support the European constitution, while 17 per cent expressed opposition.
Only 44 per cent considered EU membership as an inherently “good thing”, 17 per cent considered it as “bad”, while 37 per cent had a neutral view.
Regarding people’s biggest concerns, crime came first with 51 per cent, followed by rising prices with 28 per cent.
Nearly two-thirds of respondents trust the European Parliament and 58 per cent the European Commission.
Regarding their assessment of the economy, 11 per cent said that they consider it as very good, 66 per cent rather good, with three per cent classifying it as very bad and 18 per cent rather bad.
The Eurobarometer also published the responses given by Turkish Cypriots regarding the acquis communautaire. Sixty per cent believe it would be a good thing if it was applied in the north, whereas 16 per cent expressed the opposite view.
