The British Government is fully committed to finding a lasting solution to the Cyprus problem. We believe that a comprehensive settlement brokered by the United Nations offers the best future for the island, and wholeheartedly support progress towards a resumption of settlement negotiations. We continue to urge both sides to engage constructively with the UN's efforts to broker a comprehensive and durable settlement.
The Government continues to have a full and frank dialogue with the leaders of both communities on the issues resulting from the division of the island. Ultimately however, the terms of a future settlement are a matter for the Cypriots themselves, and to succeed must be acceptable to both communities. We hope that the issues raised in this petition will be addressed in future settlement discussions.
The missing in Cyprus is a tragic issue that affects both communities and has remained unresolved for far too long. The Government is acutely aware of the importance of resolving this matter and we understand the sensitivity of this issue to all Cypriots. In the last three years, the UK has contributed £82,000 to support the work of the Committee of Missing Persons. We are encouraged by the recent increase in activity surrounding the search for missing persons on the island, with the first remains due to be returned to families in the coming weeks. We hope that this process will promote reconciliation between the communities.
