The first one seems to be in a studio... you can see the carpet on the floor and picture in the background. Fancy that... people posing in front of artificial scenery that far back! :)

Thanks GR nice pics. The first one looks as if it's from a stage theatre.

I like the Ali Baba's (pithoi) makers. Those ones are small. We had gigantic ones. Thanks Annaka and GR for reproducing them. Keep them coming. PLZ

Have never figured out how they made those huge 'Pitharka'. Obviously not span on a wheel and always seems to be line in the middle. Did they make them in 2 pieces and then join them in the middle. Does anybody know??

Kafenes it is so simple. You would not believe it. The very big ones were made in two or three circular segments then placed onto the conical base and cemented together. After they are glazed it is almost impossible to see the joint. You can see these in excavations at Ephesus in eastern Anatolia. Greeks and perhaps Romans have been makng them for thousands of years.

But are the circular segments span on a wheel or around a mould?
BTW the picture is taken from the village of Phini.

Oooops, just realised it says Phini in writing at the bottom of the pic. I happen to have a poster of that image.

They are so perfect, I think they use a mould. I cannot remember any mention of wheel or mould. My information came from a book I purchased from a greek bookshop in Charing Cross Road , London Run by a GC from Limassol. The book was about Traditional Wine MAking in Cyprus. I wish I still had it. All the answers would be there. There were pictures of the jars being made as well. The ones we had were over a hundred years old according to my grandfather.

In this picture you can see the join. I am sure there must be some old men in the villages who will know the answer.
