NO ICE-RINKS IN FREE CYPRUS, A National Tragedy And Shame.

Cyprus(South), Greece, and Albania are the only European countries without a single Ice-Rink. Forget Climate, If that's what you're ready to say. There's snow on Troodos is there not? I view the current situation as pathetic and shameful, when the northern side have recently opened and are promoting their own brand new ice-rink in the occupied Nicosia. Why should skating be unpopular, when its one of the fastest growing pass times (ice hockey and figure skating) in the world? How can we continue to deny the Cypriot public a beautiful and fun and healthy pass time, where all around the world its taken for granted? Cypriots don't know what they're missing and they've been denied a good thing for too long. Unfortunetly in our beloved Cyprus there's too much talk and no action.

LOL, I'm a hockey fanatic! It was my life when i was living abroad. 5 days of the week and twice on sundays. First time i handled a puck with a stick was like an orgasm on ice. heh heh. Maybe i care too much, but hey there's always the occupied Nicosia ice-rink. Just an ice-rink you say... Is the same as me saying to Ronaldinhio: Calm down dude, its just a football pitch. Maybe one day ey? ;-)

WELCOME TO THE FORUM CAP................You sound like a breath of fresh air just what this forum needs..........Brilliant idea as in Paphos there is really bugger all to do at nights,an Ice Rink is an excellent idea,it is also crying out for a proper zoo and sealife centre with dolphins, sealions, penguins etc combined as another daytime attraction for the whole family to enjoy, otherwise tourism is going to drop even further and theres no point in saying "wish we had"when it too bloody late !!!!!

Actually an ice rink is being built in the shoping mall in Zakaki, Limassol to be opened August 2008:-

Super shopping mall for Limassol

Limassol will have its own super-modern CYP35m shopping mall in two years with the Tiffany shopping mall in two years with the Tiffany shopping mall currently under construction in the coastal town's city centre.

Tiffany Investments Ltd is a group of international and local investors who got together to establish a world-class shopping mall for the first time in Limassol. The majority of the shares belong to a European company registered in Holland and the rest are local.

The centre will combine shopping, entertainment, leisure, culture facilities under one roof. It is located in Zakaki, 10 minutes from Limassol town centre. The new mall will officially open in August 2008 and will house top international fashion brands, electronic goods, cosmetics, home accessories, jewellery, toys, gifts, café, bars, a web café, fast food and family restaurants, an ice skating ring and an amusement park and arcade.

There are also plans for a beauty and hairdressing salon, mini market, a bank, patisserie, a pharmacy, florist and a newsstand. All shops will not be for sale but licensed for retailers and almost half of them are booked by international retailers, the company said. The new mall will offer easy access and free parking for 1,300 cars. It will also offer childcare and nanny service for shoppers.

Thanks Highlander for the kind words. And you're right, Paphos needs something original. Niki, thank Gawd you posted. Ive heard talk about the shopping mall and rink, but was pretty pessimistic since a thought it was just talk. But judging from your reply it sounds pretty official. Thanks for the info. If you ever need skating lessons just ask! hehe. Cheers!

i used to skate when i was younger, just love it, if its true not to long to wait for a skating rink!!

I remember someone saying that there used to be one here in cyprus once upon a time, but it closed down due to it not being popular.

I hate to think of all the energy needed to maintain a rink big enough to play hockey, when it's 40°C++ outside. Think of all the CO2 emissions!!!!

Cap, I loved this bit .............."And you're right, Paphos needs something original."
but everytime that happens, the copycat mentallity will ensure that we have 2 or 3
like what happened with the bowling ally..
I thought about an ice rink years ago for pafos..
just mention it to a few cypriots that have cash, it should happen in a year or so..
but as sure as anything, soon after, we will have 2 lol lol....
