Hhhmm, why doesn't Turkey stop being so stubburn and make the Annan plan favourable to the GC's wihtout harming the TC's rights.

This way, it can solve the problem sooner rarther than later and make it's EU accession much easier. I mean, negotiations haven't even started yet and look how much trouble it's caused! Imagine, once it gets going!

The status quo hasn't made Turkey's life any easier, the status quo is just a waste of time for Turkey's future. I think Turkey has bigger concerns in it's area such as Kurds, Iraq and what crap the US want's it to do next. So if it can solve the Cyprus problem, i'm sure that will help a great deal.

You could call it a win & win situation. Okay, they might sell out on the plan to the GC's, but if it's going to make their accession smoother, why not? If the GC's reject it, then i'm sure the world can see that if there that dumb to reject a plan that is in there favour, then partition is the only answer. Okay, it might sound ugly to the GC's, but it's much better to live divided peacefully than War.

I hear alot of human rights letters, saying all settlers must go, all refugee's must return, blah, blah, blah. But the truth is, this is not the reality. It's gonna come down to a compromise and niether side is going to get all what they want. So wake up! The important thing is to make a solution that works!

You also hear alot of moaning of the US double standards, but lets face it, the US only does what it does is for it's interests. If there's nothing in it for them, your shafted. :o

Did Tassos officially reveal what changes he wants? Is UNSG officially informed about it? Does he invite Turkey for new round of negotiations and Turkey said no?

So how could Turkey make the Annan Plan favourable to the GCs without harming TC's rights?

It is obvious that Tassos and his team wait Turkey for signing the customs union agreement and results of general elections in the North. Then he will wait for the result of presidential elections of the North. Then most probably he will wait for the results of general elections of Germany, France and Austria... He does not run after a comprimised solution that will not harm TCs right and provide a smooth transitional period. He wants to get everything that he demands. Immediate withdrawal of all turkish troops, repatriation of all settlers, return of all refugees, no-bizonality based upon ethnic origin, no temporary and permenant restrictions on rights, instead of political equality of two communities; political equality of all citizens of Cyprus and majority rule...

Hmmm... Press reports in the RoC is that Tassos has proposed to Erdogan three times to begin negotiations between the RoC and Turkey, and he was denied three times. Unless you didn't really mean Turkey... :?:

Insan, you make it sound as if 'everything he demands' is irrational and evil! But the things you listed above exist in most countries in the world; they are rather the norm, than the exception... These demands are not unfair; still, giving some of them up (or part of them), is our part of the compromise.

We first have to agree on what is "fair and just" and then we can talk about the specifics of solution. And sorry but if GCs are never going to find the equality of communities "fair and just" then in our eyes we have a long way to go till we find a solution on this small island.

Agreed, turkcyp! It's always been my opinion that the Cyprus issue is so complicated precisely because both sides are right!

My post just said what it said: that Insan's approach made it seem that Tassos's demands are absurd, and I don't think they are... No more, no less. And no implication as to TC demands. I guess what I'm getting at is that, just as we have to understand that political equality is a prerequisite for a realistic solution prospect, you have to understand that it's a compromise that we are making, a concession on our part, not a predicament that has always been there and we just have to swallow it...

Oh, and my answer is YES.

I meant did UNSG invite Turkey for new round of negotiations and Turkey said no?

Thanks Dimitri.

Why does Tassos want to by-pass UN and begin direct negotiations with Turkey? Another multi-purposed, dirty trick of Tassos?

Thanks Dimitri  [/quote]

All Turkey wants is for us to accept the Annan Plan as is.

The areas that Tassos wants to negotiatate go beyond what Turkey would accept, that is why Turkey is trying to put pressure to start 'negotitiations' now.

Tassos is playing the game, just like Turkey is playig the game. Unfortunately for Turkey, she lost the game in Copenhagen 2002 when we had a more accomodating leadership and we weren't in the EU yet. Its a case of damage limitation for Turkey from now on.

I don't think negotiations will begin until Turkey signs the Ankara protocol. Once Turkey signs then a new round will begin.

Erdogan, clearly stated that Turkey will sign the Ankara protocol in early March but Tassos hasn't officially revealed his pre-conditions and proposals to UNSG, yet. He will officially reveal his demands(pre-conditions) and the changes he propose to UNSG. UNSG will relay Tassos pre-conditions and proposed changes to Turkey. Turkey will reveal her demands(pre-conditions) and counter-proposals to UNSG. Then UNSG will relay Turkey's demands(pre-conditions) and counter-proposals to Tassos. Tassos will reject Turkish demands and counter-proposals.

The end...
