ADVICE ON TINTED CAR WINDOWS, LEGAL OR NOT?

Postby Peterc » Wed Jun 13, 2007 6:33 pm

I wonder if anyone can help me? I own a pajero long base jeep which has blacked out rear passenger and boot windows. The reason that they are blacked out is that i transport expensive equipment. i was careful not to do the driver or passenger windows as i was told that this was illegal by the suppliers. i have recently resprayed the car and therefore went to the local "dvlc" office in larnaca who explained that unless i removed the blacked out film they would not change the colour on the log book. my mot is also up for renewal and i have been told that unless the colour is correct on the log book then it will fail the mot. can anyone tell me if there is website/lawbook/etc   where i can look up the rules.

I was made to remove film from my Izusu before they would pass it through the MOT. Spoils the whole feel of the car. Suspect some bureaucrat applying the letter of the law without understanding it does not restrict vision from the inside and only applied to rear side and rear window.

Hi there Peterc, as far as im aware changing a vehicles colour has nothing whatsoever to do with an mot testing station or anyway interfears with the vehicle failing a test on body colour, tints are at the descretion of the owner with minimal shading on both front as they are regulated as is the windscreen, less so are the rear side and back windows to an extent, but to totaly black out these the vehicle starts to fall more into the van catogery and might need re-classification if pernament.

I would love to know if you are sure on this as I was told the car would not pass MOT if tint remained and I would be liable to a fine if stopped by the police. Tint factory fitted ie build into the window is permited as far as I am aware but not the film applied. I managed to remove film with much elbow grease but it has changed the feel of the car and of course it is much warmer. If you can guarantee it is legal I will get it redone.

i spent most of this morning at their "dvla" dept and the police station, the police said as long as the driver and passenger windows are not tinted it is fine, but then to make sure he rang the "dvla" and made an appointment for me to see the head honcho who said its not allowed and if i wanted the mot then i would have to remove it.
