It's very unlikely that the kidnapper(s) just happened to be passing and went into the apartment on the off chance their might be a child there. It is much more probable that the family had been watched for a while and established a pattern of leaving the children unattended every evening in an unlocked apartment, checking on them occasionally.
There was a a baby sitting service available - surely on two doctors salaries they could have afforded £10 per hour ?.
They've never seemed particularly grief stricken in public. They hold hands, but never look at each other; there doesn't seem to be any warmth between them.
I fear the worst. When children have been kidapped in UK they are usually found fairly quickly (if alive) as neighbours are suspicious of a child suddenly appearing in their midst.
I think there's a lot more to this case.
