On October 25, 1971 in the United Nations Spyros Kyprianou representing Cyprus voted to recognize China in the United Nations(vote 2578). After this Kissinger decided according to most diplomats the fate of Cyprus later that October.

Before this the USA at the last hour intervened to stop the attempted Turkish invasions of 1964 and 1967 at the last hour.
Source: Ibid. p. 13

The Greek Cypriot leadership was so incompetent that they ruined their diplomatic realtionships, facilitating the Turkish invasion. Also see this thread:
Reducing the National Guard

Summary:
... "On the 1st of July 1974 the Cypriot Government decides to pass a law lowering the duration of conscription from 14 to 24 months. For the date of the application of this law they choose the date of the 20th of July (I wonder if this was an accident that this was the date of the Turkish invasion of Cyprus?)" ...

"This would have reduced the strength of the National Guard on that date to something like 5,000 men in peactime. The Turkish Cypriot enclave of Lefkosa-Agyrtas alone had 3,500 men directed from Turkish officers, and their strength(Turkish Cypriot) mounts up to 20,000 in the whole of Cyprus." ...

The Makarios regime also tried to cripple the National Guard. This led the Ioannides regime and National Guard to give orders to hit Makarios's palace. The Makarios regime was inept on every level. The only thing he was good at was passing blame to others.

Welcome back Miltiades! I really enjoyed reading about your break in Cyprus, especially when you managed to 'convince' the major (Go Miltiades! ) and when you went to Bir's village (A very touching thing you did :)). I can't wait to go to Cyprus in the summer; I haven't been for two years! I think if I leave it another year I may go crazy! :)

And to everyone about the Greece and Cyprus 'bashing', can we not just respect who we are and where we come from. I have absolutely no problem with Greeks from Greece, Turks, Cypriots..We all have similarities and differences and we should embrace them..

Well , this is what happened : Turkey invades as a direct result of the military coup orchestrated by the Junta. Regardless of the fact the Attila plan was in place long before. The Junta gave TURKEY THE GREEN LIGHT.
The" heroic "Greek Military leaders , Ioannides , Patakos , Papadopoulos , were earnestly busy trying to save their skin. When American and British diplomats in Athens were trying to contact the "Government " there was no one around .These good for nothing pieces of shit could not be found anywhere. So you have it "ELLAS ELLINON XRISTIANON " ready to defend the faith and Greece , but Cyprus !!! That's another story. Epien tous o kolos tous !!
And the likes of Nikeforos and Exasteros , or is it Apentaros , not forgetting foul mouth Alexis SS who has the audacity to tell a 61 year old to go and fuck himself , believe they are the righteous ones !!!

Let me tell once more where I stand . My country of birth is Cyprus that also happens to be the birth country of over 100 thousand T/Cs who consider Cyprus to also be their country , the country that they buried their fathers and their fathers before them. They have been driven in the arms of Turkey by the same demagogues that are today repeating the same venomous attacks on Cypriots. The Turkish army will remain in Cyprus until the T/Cs tell it to go away , and they wont do that until a fair solution has been found . Let me add here that I opposed the AP for reasons I posted many times.

“Everything” short of liberation and that’s all that matters dear Alexis.

Your liberation from your military junta meant our enslavement by the Anatolian mullahs and you want to brag about your damage control aid?

As far as I’m concerned we have NOTHING to talk about… not with you or with any of the other Greeks on this forum. Go watch over your Aegean rocks while they last and leave us in peace.

Yeah, the Junta... again.
Tell me, have you ever heard of the "Σεπτεμβριανά", also known as the Istanbul pogrom? Do you know that, according to Turkey, the reason for those events was the "massacres" Greek Cypriots commited against Turkish Cypriots? Should Greeks blame the Cypriots for the uprooting of a thousands years old 100,000 Greek community? You and your kind are the ones that legalize Turkey's invasion, shame on you...

Hi Alexis, I was wandering, wasn't the pogrom in 1955? As far as I know the first inter-communal violence in Cyprus happened in 1958 (When a bomb was placed by the TMT to incite violence), and this confuses me because why were people demonstrating against violence in 1955? Or was it that they thought there would be attacks?

Thanks.

I know people are arguing about what the Junta (Greece) did and what EOKA B and the National Guard (Cyprus) did, but were not these groups ultimately working together? And weren’t they working together under the control of a much bigger force (The CIA)? And weren't these organisations supported by a tiny minority in both Greece and Cyprus? So on grass roots level we should not hate each other because of the actions of a very unpopular dictatorship and extremist group...If anything we should unite in condemning them..

Or maybe that's a very simplistic view...I don't know...

Oh I see, so you’re referring to my signature? (Took me a while to work that out.. :) ). That's very interesting; I really had no idea where the coffee originated from. I thought it may have been Arabic actually..
