Are there any campsites in Cyprus in particular the Paphos region, what are the rules governing setting up tent, can one pitch up any where as long as they respect the countryside and people or will you get asked to move along?

Hi Colmax

There is 2 campsites in the Paphos area.

1 on the east side near the airport, which I have never found!!!

The other is at Coral Bay.

There is also one at Polis (ask VillaWagon about that one).

Campsites here are VERY basic, not like one that you find in the UK, France etc.

I would look into buying a caravan, rather then doing your stay in a tent!

Also, the sites are VERY cheap to stay on!

I received this in my emails yesterday. May be of interest to you that KOT are thinking of closing down a campsite in Polis due to lack of funds. I bet within a year the developers will have moved in and another concrete block will be out up. That end of the island is slowly sinking under the weight of the buildings.......

Dear Friends,

There is a serious threat for the Camping Site in Polis to be closed down in a near future, due to lack of money to run it.

The Green Party is organising a protest this Saturday 9 June at 12:00 at the Camp Site and encourage everyone to join.

Please pass on the info to all. Many thanks

Also by organising more events in the camping, we may contribute to support it financially.

Thanks

Hi Stuart & Twinkle.
Thanks for the info, I will track down the site at Coral Bay and give it a go, regarding Caravan sites, is there one in the Paphos area as that may work work better for us in the short term.
It sounds like a real shame the site at Polis is under threat, I hope the protest is well supported and the closure can be averted otherwise where is VW going to go for his weekend jollies.

Hi Twinkle,

For the last two years I have been trying to get the CTO to let my company take over the running of Polis Camping and have met with the existing Licence Holder, Mayor and other municipality officials. The Licence Holder wants us to get involved, The Mayor tells me along with his right hand man they want my company to get involved. We have the considerable funds needed to upgrade the site and develop it as a true Holiday and camping park as you would find elsewhere in Europe. Unfortunately the CTO can not make a decission because no one knows who would make the decission. Polis Camping is unique and I believe we can develop the site to reflect the true essence of outdoor living, and no concrete required plus add a really useful boost to Cypriot tourisum. Seems that despite my offer this valuable asset will cease to be. I give up! :(

i am disappointed to read this, as potentially this could be a great campsite. the first thing i found was it was very cheap to camp there !! like £1.50 per person per night plus £1.00 for leccy hook up etc. there was 3 of us camping in a big van and a large awning and we stayed for 2 nights for £10.00  nice it was so cheap, but that would hardly cover costs, for the campsite.
also the was loads of cheapskate sponging gits, who avoided paying the campsite, by camping just outside the perimeter and running extension leads from the toilet shower block area to the beach or the field outside, so they could enjoy the facilities for free.

it is no wonder the that the the campsite is having financial difficulties, if this backward approach to security, is allowed to continue.
i am sure that i the right hands this could be a well run profitable campsite, that we all could enjoy.
10 pounds for 2 nights

All,

Would love to get some camping done here, and am free most weekends, was one of the best things about being in Saudi was getting into the deserts and chilling out, and am looking to do the same here - just minus the dunes

My kit should arrive this week, so if anyone is planning to go camping please let me know

Cheers
