with the participation of German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Portuguese Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and Co-operation João Cravinho and EU Commissioner for Enlargement Olli Rehn.
As well as Turkey’s EU accession process, the Cyprus issue was among the topics discussed at the meeting.
Ankara stressed the need that the Cyprus issue should be solved under the aegis of the United Nations.
The meeting in the Turkish capital was hosted by Turkish Foreign Minister - Deputy Prime Minister Abdullah Gul.
Speaking at a joint press conference after the meeting, Turkish Foreign Minister-Deputy Prime Minister Abdullah Gul said that the meeting was fruitful during which many issues were sincerely discussed.
Mr Gul said that Turkey’s EU membership process was reviewed during the meeting and that Ankara made it clear that there would be no obstacles in the way of Ankara’s EU accession process if political issues were not brought into the process.
Stating that the Cyprus problem was also brought to the agenda as a political issue, Mr Gul stated that Ankara underlined the need to find a solution to the problem under the auspices of the United Nations.
‘We shared the view that it will be wrong to take the issue from the UN platform to the EU’ Mr Gul added.
For his part, the German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said that the EU attaches great importance to Turkey’s reform process and underlined the need for Ankara to improve respect for freedom of the press and freedom of expression.
He also repeated the Union’s call for a change in Article 301.
On the Cyprus issue, Mr Steinmeier expressed his disappointment that the expected developments on the Cyprus issue have not occurred during the German EU Term Presidency.
He said it was saddening that no progress was achieved towards the implementation of the Ankara protocol and the Direct Trade Regulation.
Also speaking at the press conference was the EU Commissioner for Enlargement Olli Rehn who said that the EU supports Turkey in its fight against terrorism.
He also said that the EU is satisfied with the progress made in Turkey’s EU membership negotiations.
Turkey-EU Troika meetings at ministerial level are being held during each presidency since the 1999 Helsinki Summit where Turkey was granted the candidate status.
