*Settlers*

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

*Settlers*

Postby gizzy » Sat Jun 02, 2007 9:30 pm

Ok...the question is:Whats going to happen to the settlers in a united cyprus?

First we need to know the magnitude of the problem:
1-How many settlers are there? Source: http://nufussayimi.devplan.org/Census%202006.pdf

I have worked on related figures to makes things easier to see:

The permanent settler population is 94,714. Keeping in mind that 27,728 of them are already citizens, this leaves us with around 70,000 settlers gaining citizenship in the future. Morover these people will also have "children" and that will add up to the figure...

2- What will happen to these people if the island is to unite?
-Settlers who have gained the right to obtain united cyprus citizenship (by marrying TC, being adopted, etc) are ofcourse will be considered as citizens and will be free to stay.
-It should be our duty to make sure the rest of the settlers leave confortably and smoothly back to their country. This procedure should not be rushed and must be completed before the unification of the island. Turkey must pay "compensation" to these people and must be finantially responsible for their "traveling" and "moving out expenses". It must be the duty of united cyprus to make sure these people reach to their destination safe.

I will add more later on...I have to think ^^

So settlers who arrived in 1977, with or without children (born here) should leave?

Why don't you give us the real figures Rain. If you are going to question Gizzy's post, then give her and us the courtesy of the "correct information", that you seem to know.

Why specifically 1977?? What difference does the year 1977 have from any other year from 1974 and till now?

That was just off the top of my head, I was trying to make the point of time some settlers have been here for many years, having their children here.

NO, it wasnt off the topic and it was really clear... What I meant was that any settler that didnt gain lawful rights to become a citizen cannot be citizens...simple as that...there is nothing to debate on this subject...

Unless the settlers who are not "connected" to any Native TC's have been given permission to stay in a United Cyprus by the Cypriot Government, they all are considered to be "Illegal Aliens" who have been in the country illegally, when ever they came in. Even with the ones who have gotten married to a Native TC, will be lucky not to pay a fine, for entering the Cypriot territory illegally.

No Kikapu, I do not know the exact population figures in North Cyprus, not so sure even if the authorities do. I was only referring what all local news papers wrote about the figures when they have been announced.
