Those water-sellers used to be common here, too. There are still a few in Istanbul, mainly for tourists, particularly in the Blue Mosque area; they make more money charging to have their photo taken than selling water!

This one is a police station I believe in Paphos.

Notice the two vicious police dogs at the front.

Well, the ones in Istanbul sold some sweet bright red concoction - God knows what it was but it was virulent looking.

The ones in Nicosia in the early 1950s had iced water in their backpack but they carried a small brass jug with some sweetened lemon juice in it and you could choose a glass of water for ½ piastre or a lemon drink for 1 piastres (for the ignorant, there were 9 piastres to the shilling and 20 shillings to the pound, so 1 piastre would be a little over half-a-cent in today's money. However, in the value of money today, I would guess it would be somewhere between 30 and 50 cents.

In Larnaca we had a Turkish Cypriot who sold hot 'salebi' ?? in the winter. He had the brass container on his back and would bend down and pour it in a cup.
