So what is it? Communist musicians secretly composing revolutionary songs during the Junta?

You are preety close Sotos. Some of the musical instruments being used are Armenian. As you notice there is light outside but they have a black curtain over the window and the light on, also someone watching to see if anyone is coming.

Guys, I think I found the reason why they r secretly composing..
Coz all those greate musicians like Greek rembetes or Armenian composers mostly used to be hashish smokers...

Good picture, Kafenes: It looks like the United Nations of Asia Minor, but the setting is definitely not. The musical instruments can all be found in the Caucases (Nagorny - Karabagh), Eastern Turkey and Northern Iran. With the Nay (Nay) amongst the intruments, I would have loved to listen to the music they were playing. Most of the characters indeed carry Armenian characteristics. I wonder if they were in the United States during the MacCarthy years. But the furniture (chairs ) make them a bit later.
I suggest Kafenes knows more about the picture than he is letting on. Very interesting!

Two of the instruments are definitely distinctive Armenian. I realise it's around the 60's era from the way they are dressed and even a little later too. They are not in Armenia as the oud is not used there and they are too well dressed for Armenians of Armenia in that era. Unfortunately that's all I know about the picture.

Kafenes, I am surprised re: the 'oud. I have an LP of Armenian Music and they definitely play the 'oud. They sing in Armenian and Turkish. One of my favourite LPs. Unfortunately I dont have a record deck anymore and can not find it on CD. I will try the web or go to an antique shop and buy a record player! I must. :( :(
