Transporting dog to Cyprus

Postby Cyprus4MeSoon » Thu May 31, 2007 10:23 pm

Hello Everyone :)
I hope that someone out there can give me some information please. We are planning to move to Cyprus within the year. We have a dog that we want to bring with us, but I am really nervous about puting him on a plane as he has never been confined to a cage before , and never even stayed at kennels. (We have had the benefit of my parents looking after him whilst we go on our travels)

What I was wondering is...could we drive over to cyprus with him? I have heard of people going via ferry (when taking their cars) and wondered if this would be an option for us. Obviously we would have all the vacinations etc in place. It would just make me hapier that putting him in the plane hold!

If anyone does know, could thay let me know of the route from the UK, as I seemed to have come to a dead end on my searching :(

Hope someone can help please

Drive to Athens and boat across to limassol -- I believe this is summer only and you fly from Athens whilst your car's on the high sea's -- you may have to check on that.

The better option is to drive to Salerno Italy and catch a Grimaldi freighter cruise to limassol -- this is a nice trip and you travel with the car .

The Grimaldi option isn't a luxury cruise type vessel -- It's a freighter that also carries passengers -- accommodation is basic but the food is good.

I don't know if they accept dogs though

It's only a 4 1/2 flight it won't kill it, I intend to bring my two cats and dog next year, if the flight will upset your dog wait till it sees some of the cockroaches and lizards.
We love our pets dearly but they're flying over and I'm sure that they wont like it either.

Hi Southerner, I understand exactly what you are saying, and I know that I am being stupid about the flying, but I cannot get it out of my head that he will be in the hold of the plane!. I try to think of all the thousands of pets that are taken abroad and are well and happy, but then I picture him in the hold, and off I go again about driving over.

Also I have been told that, though it is as you say only 4 1/2 hours flight, the animals have to be away from you for a lot longer, and that they are rarely on the same plane as you!!!! Maybe I should look into it a bit more.

Do you know yet who you will be using to fly your animals out?

Sorry for sounding so pathetic, I will probably end up flying him over and everyone being happy!!!!

Hi Southerner,

I tried to send you a pm, in response to yours, but I keep getting that this feature is temporarily disabled!!

Wow, that is a good price

Sorry to be pain, but what company have you got this price from. I would like to investigate it further and get more details, as I would a least be a little happier that he was on the same plane as us. I assume we would check him in at the same time(even if not the actual same place) as us. And also once we have landed can again pick him up the same time as we do the cases. He will then have less time away from us!

A lot of my worry was that he would be on a different plane and would then have to wait for us to arrive, or us him.

Obviously, I agree that the easiest and quickest way is by flying, and am really trying to get over the fears of him travelling in this way. I think by driving over it takes approx 4 days!!! so ultimately we probably would all get stressed out

Thank you very much for all your help.

If you've got a contact/shipper could you post it in the forum as I'm investigating how to get a couple of dogs over as well.
