My husband left Cyprus in 1952 and returned to live here in 1994. As he was out of Cyprus between 1955-1960 he had to re-apply for Cyprus citizenship, but was considered a Cypriot and his passport always showed he could stay as long as he liked. However, in order to vote he did apply for Cypriot citizenship and on his ID card he is now shown as a British Cypriot.

My case was slightly different. I am English, married since 1957 and whenever I came to Cypus, was only given three months stay, but both our children were given unlimited time.

When I came here in 1994 I had to apply for what was then known as the Pink Card. After a year when it was time to renew the Card, the immigration officers advised me to apply for Cyprus Citizenship.

We filled in the appropriate forms, paid for the official stamps, and within two months, both of us were given citizenship and I am now classed as a British Cypriot on my ID card and we both received the voting books afterwards.

As this took place 13 years ago, I seem to remember having to sign an affidavit in the Nicosia Court to accompany the application.

Ok??!!

Well I know that the laws did change I mean when I lived there I used to get a work permit so easily .. I mean when my Dad was not a Cypriot Citizen yet. And now when I came back and I ve got some rights for sure at least to stay in the country, I m given a hard time even to have my stay extended, when the reason I went back in the first place was to be with Dad (GBHS) when he was hospitalized.

U see this is what I m talking about the ambiguity.

Plua I beleive the fact you re Brititsh helps very much.

But thanks for sharing this with me anyways.

Cheers
