Feel free to talk about anything that you want.

If any one would like a quote on importing their own vehicle give me a pm (£1000 max) ,if you are planning on keeping hold of your vehicle for many years in Cyprus then yes it is better to have it shipped over,as long as you have been the registered keeper for more than 6 months its duty free for as long as you keep it,you only have to pay for registering the vehicle (£600) but if you plan to sell it within a year or two in Cyprus you will have to then pay the duty due its as broad as its long that why we import so many cars into Cyprus at present as we pay the shipping, duty and regististration then, mot and tax them all within 2/3 weeks max.

Hello, I hope you don't mind a few questions as I noted your comments about importing in the forum:
I have been trying to work out what it would cost me to ship my car from the UK to Cyprus and what duty/excise/VAT would be payable and what the registration entails.

I have a Mitsubishi Pajero 3.5V6 Petrol which I've owned since 2005. I am moving to Paphos as a resident with my fiance and we both intend to work. I plan to keep my vehicle indefinitely and my fiance will look for a vehicle when we arrive in Cyprus, as we're selling his Ford Maverick in the UK. I imported my Pajero myself and paid shipping from Japan plus import duty(10%) and VAT (17.5%). It was free for me to register with the DVLA as I am a disabled driver and I'm wondering if there are any concessions in Cyprus or a similar "badge" type scheme to help with road tax (I don't have to pay any in the UK). I can't remember if the UK Badge gives any privileges now Cyprus is part of the EU?

I'm also looking at shipping all our furniture as we are renting and unfurnished property in Paphos. I don't know whether we can ship the car at the same time as the furniture or do we have to do this separately? We have even considered driving it over if this works out cheaper but would still need to know how much it would cost to get it on the road once we arrive.

Sorry for all the questions but I am researching this move thoroughly so we hope not to have any nasty surprises. We have savings as a cushion to help us get established and if all goes well we will reside in Paphos indefinitely.

Thank you for taking the time to read this, for some reason I can't send PMs, because I recently joined I assume.
Regards
Helen

Helen, my advice having done it in 2005,is DONT.We were told it was all easy as we were in europe now so we shipped over our 1992 2.5 pajero exceed(hubbies pride and joy) and we ended up shipping it back again! We supplied all the paperwork required by customs at Nicosia, paid cy£26 per month rd tax, insured it at an inflated amount as it was'nt on cyprus plates and 6 months later was asked for yet another load of paperwork we never had and could'nt get. When we enquired how much tax they would want if we elected to pay it,they asked for cy£17.500!!!!!!It was only valued in uk at around £3000!Also ,to put it on cyprus plates it would have been nearly cy£2000 to register it as it goes on the cc so you can imagine how much yours will be.Also,I do'nt believe you can get the same disablement deal as in UK.(not sure though)

Thanks for the reply Beverley, I have been getting conflicting information from other sources and much as the Paj is my pride and joy, I have to be realistic. We're not moving until September so I have time to work out what to do but I saw so many Pajeros in Cyprus I was hoping I could take it 'cest la vie'

He comes highly reccomended. He in Paphos.....search deals on wheels cyprus.

OH ye simple simon, famous words you wont get a car in Cyprus for under £3000cy "rubbish" we in the trade all know about him !!!!!!!! first worked for Andys Motors thats where he learned how to rip the Brits off, using the buy from me as you can trust me i'm English and i wont cheat you like the Cypriot car dealers,it just a shame it is infact the other way around !!!
I personaly dont buy cars at £800 and sell them on for £3000 making 220% profit at the expense of my own countrymen and thats a fact !!!

KNG,

Please re-read Highlanders post. It's no BS.

If you've owned the vehicle for more than 6 months and intend keeper her for at least a couple of years then you forgo any import duty into Cyprus.

There's no VAT as you're already in the EU.

Just insurance, tax and registration.

Cheap at half the price.

Hello everybody I 've just joined, be gentle with me.
My wife and I are hoping to move permanently to Cyprus soon, I bought a Japanese imported car 2 years ago in Cyprus but it got written off last year so we have been hiring since then, my wife wants us to get another car so we can either ship my BMW 5 series over or buy a car in Cyprus.
Secondhand cars in Cyprus are over priced and usually badly serviced. Does anyone know of an agent that can deal with all the paperwork, I also have a Triumph TR7 V8 that I want to bring over eventually.
Unless I can get someone that knows what they are doing to handle the legal side of shipping a car from UK to Cyprus I will probably end up buying another Jap import.

Any advice welcome, thanks Dave

Hi BMW114, I'm new to this too........ I've looked at importing my Pajero (I also imported from Japan) in 2005 and the shipping cost is the least of your worries! If you import a vehicle you will have to pay excise duty unless you plan to never sell the vehicle as the duty only becomes payable if you sell it in Cyprus. The stinger is that they charge VAT on the value of the vehicle, not too bad if it's older but the cost of registration is based on the cc of the vehicle and with mine (a 3.5ltr V6) the registration is about 900CyP, then the monthly road tax (also based on the cc, in my case about 35Cyp per month) about 400CyP a year. Astronomical if you're in my position as a disabled driver I pay no road tax in the UK so unless you are willing to pay these unearthly sums think long and hard about how much your vehicle means to you compared to starting your new life on the island. In addition, check everything you are told twice, then check it again because getting a straight answer about any of these issues is nigh on impossible. Don't want to put you on a downer here but I am selling my Pajero in the Uk and will buy a vehicle on the island when I arrive. Yes, they are more expensive than in the UK, but compared to the cost of importing they don't look so expensive after all.

PS: Be careful of agents who offer to do the paperwork for you........ this they may do but it doesn't make much difference to what you end up paying!
