Galanos gets funds promise from Lillikas
New team will promote Famagusta problem abroad
THE Foreign Ministry jointly with the Famagusta Municipality and the Press and Information Office are to set up a coordinating team to promote the Famagusta issue abroad, following the recent collection of signatures for the return of the occupied city to its Greek Cypriot inhabitants.
The decision was taken at a meeting between Foreign Minister George Lillikas and a Municipal Delegation headed by Mayor Alexis Galanos this week, in the wake of complaints by the latter that they lacked the means of campaigning for the refugees’ rights.
"We had the opportunity of reviewing the current developments on the Cyprus problem, and especially the issue of the return of Famagusta city, which remains a basic objective of government policy," Lillikas said after the meeting.
He added that they had also discussed ways of closer cooperation "for the promotion of the just demand of the Famagusta refugees to return to the occupied ghost city."
Responsible
The coordinating team will be responsible for the planning of events focused abroad, aimed at facilitating the effort of the Famagusta Municipality, especially after its initiatives to collect signatures from the people of Famagusta.
Galanos on his part said that they had expressed their concern about the continuing Turkish moves to colonise appropriate the occupied areas.
"This is a very difficult period because of the climaxing of Turkish intransigence, coupled with some hypocritical tendencies in Europe, but this is one more reason why the campaign of the occupied municipalities should be intensified," Galanos said.
He stressed that the real problem of Cyprus was not the so-called isolation of the Turkish Cypriots, as it is deliberately suggested, but the drama of Greek Cypriot alienation from their properties and the places where they were born.
The Famagusta Mayor also stressed the need for the necessary campaign funds to be placed at the disposal of the refugee municipalities, so that the refugee problem would be exposed in its true dimensions.
