On the thorny Cyprus issue, Foreign Minister Gül stressed that Ankara very much wanted a resumption of the peace process but that both the restart of Cyprus talks as well as their success depended in great measure on whether the Greek Cypriot side has changed its position and wants a settlement.
“Resumption of the talks and their success depend on the Greek Cypriots. Turkey and the Turkish Cypriot people have done the most they could do. They did much more than the world was expecting from them in the last exercise, which ended with the Greek Cypriot rejection of the U.N. plan despite a massive Turkish Cypriot approval vote on it in the April referenda. Our preference is to see a settlement on the island on the basis of a compromise acceptable to all parties. Turkey will continue to support every effort in that direction. In goodwill and with a constructive approach, we will continue supporting such efforts,” he said.
Gül said the upcoming February parliamentary elections and the April presidential polls in northern Cyprus should not affect the peace talks process since the Turkish Cypriots had already expressed their strong desire for a settlement.
“If the Greek Cypriot side changes its position, then talks could start at any time,” he said, adding, “Turkey and Turkish Cypriots are prepared for a resumption of talks at any moment, even today.”
