It seems this heat will explode many things instead cooking the meal well to feed all concerned parties.

Commission protocol ready for Turkey to sign

by Nicos Bellos

Brussels, Feb 3 (CNA) -- The European Commission has prepared a protocol for Turkey's customs union with the ten new EU members, including the Republic of Cyprus, and awaits the Turkish government to come forward and meet its obligations by signing it.

Director of the European Commission's Enlargement Directorate B for Candidate Countries, Pierre Mirel, told a meeting of the Joint EU-Turkey Parliamentary Committee yesterday that the protocol was a legal document, for which there were various legal opinions as to whether its signing would mean the recognition of the Republic of Cyprus or not.

That is why both sides (GC and Turkey) are playing to time.

Turkey wants to find a solution to Cyprus before October 3, but that is exactly the reason T-Pap is not sitting on the table.

GC strategy is that. let's get the Turkey to sign this document first. Then the next round is to ask to start political relations with Turkey like opening embassies, etc. etc. The idea is that Turkey will cave in to any demand in order to be a part of EU, so we can get whatever we want before Turkey becomes a member.

The other side of the coin is this. Turkey will sign the protocol with GC administration. And negotiations will start on October 3rd. But Turkey also will not want to solve the Cyprus problem before they are in the EU for sure. GCs can not guarantee that Turkey will ever get into EU and Turkey knows this. France for example is even changing its constitution this week to make it compulsory for the French Government to go to referendum for any new applicant country. Seeing this Turkey will never completely solve the Cyprus problem before she is securely inside the EU. What if Cyprus problem is solved the way GCs want it but at the last minute Turkish EU entry is refused by any member including GCs. That is a risk no Turkish PM will take.

SO as I have said in this forum. Prepare yourself for a long ride. Because Cyprus Problem can only be solved simultaneously at the Turkeys' EU entry. That mean we are here in this forum talking at least another 10 to 15 years. In 10 to 15 years "kim olur kim galir"....

Good luck to all of us,

Now, it's of no use to blame anyone. Let's be realistic. We have undertaken a pledge in exchange for getting a date. We got the date and we must deliver on the pledge. The only way to escape this trap is to find a way to reach a compromise deal on Cyprus before that date.

This one seems to me most reasonable way to be followed by Turkey. But in case both parties couldn't have satisfied at the end of the next round of negotiations; most probably Turkey will ask suspension of EU talks until a solution is reached concerning Cyprus problem.

If no solution has been reached after a certain time period and the international political organizations can't force both parties to meet upon a best possible compromised solution; Turkey will forget her dream about EU and focus upon an agreed partition. Thenceforth she'll look for alliance with Russia, laic middle eastern and far eastern countries.

Europe will never want that to happen, they do want turkey in whatever the people think and even though the french are changing laws nearer to the time of entry one big campaign by the goverment they could sell ice to eskimos.
