Why should the church even be allowed to participate in state affairs, considering the fact that they do NOT pay taxes (or serve in the army)?
All members of the state pay taxes, serve in the army, etc, but they don't. Why should they, then, have a say in affairs that they are not involved?

the church is not one person inparticular. don't members of your church pay taxes, serve in the militarty, etc.? perhaps being actual clergy makes you exempt from some of these things, but shouldn't a clergy person be exempt from miliarty service. after all, the reason for the military is to protect thier own citizens, which included being able to kill the enemy if necessary. it just kind of makes sense, in that case, to exclude the people who are the church.
looking at it that way, i can almost understand why the church should participate somewhat in state affairs, to perhaps bring that "peace and love" attitude into the government.
that is an ideal situation, that in reality, can't work (like communisim.) organized religion is, after all, nothing more than a business, run by a bunch of people with egos and a thirst for money.

Piratis; Its a pity there were not many of you prior to Archbishop Makarios III. Then you would not have had an Archbishop as terrorist leader.

[quote="Diogenes"]Thank you all for you replies so far...

- Dear Miltiades, I am sorry to hear about your story. But why did you do a christian wedding, since you didn't want one? Why did you played along with their SICK ideology who as you said treats "people not married in church as sinners" ? And what's the need, really, in baptizing the children? Did you know that "baby-baptism" is not even part of the Bible? Where did the church get that from, and why do they do it? Isn't the most SICK thing in the world to think that every innocent little baby is born as a sinner? In my opinion, "baby-baptism" is a CRIME...
I also totally agree with you. The church's policies and ethics are still based on standards from the Middle Ages. That's what happens when you demonize science and not keeping up with the rest of the world. Imagine, many Christians even today still believe that the earth was created 5,000 years ago, even though geologists, and geoscientists, established that this is ridiculous.

quote]

I have posted on more than one occasion that I do not believe in the existence of a creator . I have also stated that most religions contain within their religious teachings elements that my logic finds difficulty in understanding , will not elaborate as to what these elements are but such elements are around us and can be easily identified. Contrary to what the religious scholars would have us believe , religion has historically been responsible for creating and intensifying conflict amongst people with opposing or slightly different interpretations of their brand of religion.

On the hand religion also offers people a hope in life , offers the sick and the poor an avenue in which to seek solace. The 10 commandments are beyond criticism and are respected by millions of people. I can not give an example of other religious doctrines since I have never been interested in finding out much about other religions , Christianity was taught to us in school hence I know more about this than any other religion.

To answer your question on my marriage in church , my late father was a religious person and a firm believer in what he described as the Christian way of life which demanded that children are baptized and that they were brought up in the "proper " way. I got married in Church because it made him very happy and it made a lot of my family also happy.Neither I nor my wife were or are now religious. The christening events are part of tradition , as well as , to the Christians , a part of life.

May I conclude by adding that I firmly believe that all religions are man made naturally and that there is no creator. Evolution is all around us as evidence of this. The fanatics who believe that killing their fellow humans will somehow earn them a place in heavens are the victims of doctrines interpreted by sick and morally corrupt individuals. The Christians of Bosnia believed that killing non Christians was somehow acceptable to their God , and visa verse. Look at Irag at the moment and ask is there a God that guides these people in their thirst for blood . I think not.

Did the Turks ever had a leader that it was not a terrorist? Invading, killing, raping and grabbing the land of others is all the Turks ever did, and continue doing. Maybe it is time that the Turks have some non terrorist leaders so those poor bastards will finally learn what civilization means? Don't you think they had enough of the dark ages already?

Who? Somebody that commits crimes and illegalities by forcing 200.000 people out of their homes and illegally occupies part of another sovereign country? No, that YOUR leaders.

Papadopoulos has never done anything wrong apart for fighting for justice against the colonialists and those that wanted to impose undemocratic and racist actions against us.

The Turkish propaganda is simply trying to present Papadopoulos in a negative way. I bet you didn't even know about him before he was elected. But then the Turkish propaganda went to work to brainwash you as usual, and all the info you have about him comes from there.

So you think there was nothing wrong with Papadopoulus`s association with the Akritas Organization or attempts to achieve ENOSIS even after 1960 ?

By the way, your numbers are inflated, shoot for something lower next time.

Papadopoulos had absolutely nothing to do with any attempts to achieve enosis after 1960.

Regarding the allegations about the "Akritas Organization" all that it is ever alleged about that is a single document. Not only his participation in the creation of that document is just rumors, but also it is just a document anyways.

Are you really going to declare innocent your terrorist leaders that violate the human rights of 100s of thousands of people and international law, and accuse Papadopoulos of being a terrorist because of some rumor about his participation of creating a document several decades ago? Talk about hypocrisy!!!

Religious doctrin was the originator of the control mechanism that Politics cut it's teeth on... the simplistic premise of right and wrong re most issues works for me...
