Truth in advertising, eh?

The reason I posted the menu pic is because it's supposedly from a restaurant in California, the author mentioned that it's boshin-tang, and serving dog meat for human consumption is illegal stateside.

I think serving horse meat is illegal too, but one taste of McDonald's...

Cheers...

There's nothing wrong with horse meat. I've had it many times. Like beef in texture but slightly sweeter in taste and lower in fat/cholesterol. Why should they make it illegal?

What happened was that a couple of years ago, congress stopped funding the inspection of facilities that slaughter horses for human consumption. Because they can't sell their wares without inspection, they were effectively put out of business.

The idea of eating horse meat is off-putting stateside, so most of the meat was exported to Japan or various countries in Europe (France, Belgium, Italy, etc). Most people think of horses as companion animals as opposed to livestock. I guess it was a subjective thing more than anything else.

In any case, as of last April, the pro-slaughter lobbies managed to get the funding ban reversed (or something along this line) and they are once again in business. Only California has an outright ban on consumption of horse meat, but other states have bans on it to some degree as well.
