Unfortunately many people see two groups of social problems:
The first is the “honorable” social problems such as…
My child is sick, I’m unemployed, my wife is expecting again, my partner left me, etc
…and then we have the “dishonorable” socials problems such as…
I’m an alcoholic, I’m a drug user, I’ve got a gambling problem, I’m bankrupt, etc.
The truth is that ALL the above are common SOCIAL PROBLEMS that need to be dealt with urgently.
The junky or the alcoholic is as much a victim of the social environment as the unemployed, or the lady that just doesn’t know when to stop having children.
There is always the risk that we may be conned out of a few pounds but the risk that it may be for real is far more serious and the consequences far more severe.
How is it possible to sleep tight at night, and especially in this terrible weather we’ve had lately, knowing that somebody you know may have been evicted and desperately seeking shelter in a park or something?
I once saw a dead homeless man under a highway bridge in Perth (Australia) in the early nineties. He was malnourished, curled up from the cold, and looked a mess. In the days that followed nobody came forth to claim the body despite repeated requests by the police via the media so his identity remained unknown and was buried in an unmarked grave.
This is usually the end of the road for many people that have one or more of these social problems and are shunned away by society. First they become outcasts from society and a few months or years later get picked up by an ambulance from under a bridge or from a ditch.
