Sex descrimination if only men have to do the service! Been here for 3 years now and not done it yet. Have no intentions of doing it either. Having somebody shouting orders at me tends to make me want to lamp em one!

Only GCs have to serve. Armenians, Latins and the other minorities don't have to. But recently I heard to the radio that this might change.

And you think those that serve do it because they like it?

I didn't say they did. Being forced to do such a service brings out the worst in some people. They can start resenting everything to do with the situation, from the louvi that they probably get fed to the goverment. Getting trained to become a killer or to get killed in order to protect politics is not my idea of life in itself.

Don't get me wrong Sotos, for those that WANT to do it, that would voluntarily go in without getting forced into it, I have the utmost respect for them.

Thank you Sotos...that was my main question..
Now...can anyone explain to me as to why Cypriot Armenian/Latin/Maronites are not called upon to serve in National Guard? is it a case of mistrust?

I think that is because initially the national guard was just GCs. In that radio program they said it is discrimination against GCs that only them have to serve. The representatives of the minorities accepted that but they said it would be better if they had to serve reduced time.

So in other words, while enjoying the full benefits of Cypriot citizenship, the minorities are trying to excuse themselves from the obligation of military service applied to GC's....nice1

I think it is how everybody is used. Nobody likes to waste 26 months from his life but GCs get used to the idea because they know they will have to do it. But if you think you will not have to do it and then they tell you that you should then you don't like it. Hazza for example would only have to do 3 or 6 months but because he was born abroad and he didn't get used to the idea of serving he now finds it very difficult.

my boys are 1/4 Cypriot, 1/4 Italian and 1/2 English, born in the Uk , christened orthodox, (that was the mistake) brit passport etc, and still had to do the army.

If they were not christened orthodox they would not have had to do the army.
