How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

I've forgotten one of the strongest trumps of US

US MAY USE ARMENIAN GENOCIDE TO PRESSURE TURKEY IN IRAQI ISSUE

YEREVAN, 01.02.05. The US may use the Armenian Genocide as a trump for pressuring Turkey in the issue of Iraq, says Milliyet (Turkey).

This concern is due to the 2005 commemoration of the 90th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide in Armenia and many countries and to the fact that many European parliaments are considering the Armenian Genocide recognition. Especially worrisome is the statement by a European ambassador that Condoleeza Rice may be not very much included to prevent initiatives for the Armenian Genocide acknowledgement unlike the previous US state secretary and that `Washington may wish to use the problem to pressure Turkey in the Iraqi issue.`

The Turkish FM is sensing a potential problem here. Ankara is taking no step without considering the Armenian Genocide problem. The Institute of Turkish History is preparing a series of articles on the issue. Historian Betul Aslan has published a book entitled `The Armenian Events in Erzurum` which is one more attempt to mislead the international community. In fact Aslan is trying to prove that 50,000 Turks were killed in Erzurum and neighboring areas in 1918-1920.

Milliyet regrets that the May 2005 Vienna conference of Armenian and Turkish historians will not take place because of Armenia`s refusal.

Without naming Iran, the top defense official says Turkey and US can work together to prevent spread of nuclear weapons

ANKARA – Turkish Daily News

A top U.S. defense official sought Turkey's cooperation against the spread of nuclear weapons, without citing neighboring Iran whose nuclear program has caused a crisis between Tehran and the United States.

Douglas J. Feith, the U.S. undersecretary of defense for policy, said at a meeting with Foreign Minister Abdullah Gül in Ankara that Turkey and the United States could work together to prevent nuclear proliferation, an issue that the U.S. administration sees as being of the utmost importance, officials said.

Tension between Iran and United States is high, as Washington has accused Tehran of seeking nuclear weapons. Tehran denies allegations and says its nuclear program is for civilian purposes only.

‘Leadership' role for Turkey in anti-nuke efforts:

Feith discussed a number of issues during his two-day talks in Ankara ranging from global defense posture plans to the situation in Iraq and anti-proliferation efforts.

He said yesterday that Turkey could take a role in efforts to prevent the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.

“We have encouraged Turkey to find where it would like to play a leadership role, and we would be happy to support a Turkish effort like that,” he said. He did not specify what role Turkey could play but said there were opportunities for every country to contribute to efforts in a number of fields such as interdicting shipments of weapons of mass destruction on the high seas or search-and-rescue activities.

“If Turkey wants to pick a topic, that would be a good thing and we'll be happy to work with them. We picked a few for ourselves, and we would invite Turkey to join us as a number of other countries have,” Feith said

I hope we can form a millennium members club within the cyprus-forum members. Who is next, btw? If he/she is not a GC, this means Piratis status has already downgraded to minority status. Does it cause him to leave the club in order not to become a minority in millennium members club? ;)

I think first he will try to get a veto power on everything we talk about. ;)

Or would he trust us and accept the minority status with no veto power?

Ukraine 'sold Iran cruise missiles'

AN investigation has been launched into allegations Ukraine sold nuclear-capable cruise missiles to Iran and China in violation of international treaties.

The allegations were made in a letter by politician Hrihory Omelchenko and addressed to President Viktor Yushchenko, who took office last week.

Mr Yushchenko, who takes over from Leonid Kuchma, has promised to investigate corruption and misdeeds that allegedly flourished during his predecessor’s ten years as president.

Mr Kuchma allegedly sanctioned the sale of sophisticated radar systems to Iraq in 2002, contravening UN sanctions.

In the letter, Mr Omelchenko said an investigation launched last summer "proved that some 20 air-launched Kh-55 and Kh-55M cruise missiles with nuclear capability were exported to third countries" in contravention of international treaties.

"Six missiles destined for Russia ended up in Iran . . . six missiles destined for Russia ended up in China" the letter said. It said the exports occurred during 1999 to 2001.

Vyacheslav Astapov, a spokesman for Ukraine’s Prosecutor-General, said the office began a probe into the alleged sales last summer and "this year we received new information".

Mr Astapov also said a top-ranking Iranian diplomat in Ukraine met with Prosecutor-General Svyatoslav Piskun.

Iranian diplomats in Kiev were not available for comment.

Mr Omelchenko also claimed that businessmen from several enterprises - including state-run weapons exporter Ukrspetseksport - in the US, Cyprus and Iran shared hefty profits from several illicit defence deals.

US diplomats in Kiev were "aware of the reports" on illicit sales and took them "very seriously," a US embassy spokesman said.
