Ahem…

Back on topic for a moment – our accountants set-up our limited company in no time although we did choose a ‘pre-approved’ company name.

VAT is an interesting experience here – the form looks similar but the rules are different. Also, if you are bringing goods in from other EU countries be careful not to fall foul of the draconian Intrastat rules.

What does that mean? We will be bringing a lot of computer equipment over for our Cyprus registered company. These are specialised items we can't get in Cyprus.

Also some TV's and DVD players etc - will this cost us just to do this or should we just leave them in the UK and get new things in Cyprus?

Lots of questions!!

Thank you

It only affects you if you are VAT registered and importing products to sell through your business here – not computers and stuff you are bringing over to set it up.

Cyprus are very hot on Intrastat completion – we got a fine before we even knew we had to be Intrastat registered (they keep changing the limits).

Happy to tell you all about it and bring you up-to-speed once you are up-and-running.

It’s not easy is it?

We initially registered for Intrastats because we wanted to be ‘legal’ but found we were already over the limit so they hit us with a retrospective fine. Thanks! We could have kept quiet about it but there you are.

Then they increased the limit so we de-registered but I understand that they have reduced the limit so we need to register again!

We’ve found the VAT office in Limassol to be very helpful in these matters – they explained the VAT form (it looks the same as the UK form but is filled-in differently) and also the Intrastat thing.

To be honest, I leave all such matters to Mrs. CyprusGrump and I’m sure she’d be happy to advise on our latest understanding of the rules if you are stuck.
