roll up roll up for the great turtle dove slaughter

Postby BOF » Sat May 05, 2007 11:35 pm

8) Yes folks this sunday and weds only! as sanctioned by the government, the great turtle dove spring slaughter !
the slaughter of the endangered turtledove will take place at selected points by the brave and glorious hunters of Cyprus!
despite being outlawed by the E.U. a special massacre will take place as promised.
Once again Cyprus shoots itself in the foot by allowing this......firstly action will undoubtably be taken against Cyprus by the E.U.
secondly Tourists from central europe and Great Britain are not kindly disposed to such goings on and are very environment aware. if publicised in the media tourists will think twice about their holiday destination...and with tourism already down this really wont help matters.

And sadly it won't worry the Cypriots one iota as they relish in the kill .

I wonder what they will blame the ever decreasing number of tourists on this time -- they have never acknowledged that they are pricing themselves out of the holiday market let alone realise that most Europeans ( that excludes Cyprus ) take a very dim view of this unnecessary "sport".

I'm sure a lot of potential visitors will vote with their feet and go elsewhere .

The Cyprus attitude to animals and wild life is responsible for quite a number of foreigners leaving Cyprus and going back home let alone the missing tourists as they can't cope with the brutality that is an accepted practice on this otherwise beautiful island.

i was a witnessed to such barbaric actions in Bali once.

its a sickening act and the Balanese continued it, till they discovered that the giant turtles were worth more alive than gutted for food and souvenirs.

now a whole tourist industry revolves around the giant turtles and are protected by law.

Pitsilos, Turtle doves are birds.
I wonder if anyone here including BOF has seen a turtle dove in Cyprus. Unless you are a hunter and know where to look for them you will not come across turtle doves. There are less turtle doves coming to Cyprus every year because there are more and more buildings around the coastal areas which puts them off. So in actual fact tourism is our main reason why turtle doves are becoming more scarce in Cyprus. The everyday tourist never sees a turtle dove or cares too much about them, as long as they have the sun and cheap beer they don't give a shit about turtle doves. It's just some lobbyist groups who want some attention and publicize the whole thing out of proportion. Why don't they complain about the quail, the ducks, the thrush, the blackbirds?? As a reformed shooter (gave up 6 years ago) I felt sorry for the birds. Hunting has been one of our oldest traditions and hunters are more environmentally conscious now then ever before.

Could it be that less birds leave the island every year so that less birds breed and less birds return the following year. Stop shooting them so more breed and the numbers go up and more people will see them.

It is a fact that less birds arrive every year to Cyprus beacause they are slaughtered by the thousands in Turkey where there is hardly any game control.

Stop killing birds and other creatures Cypriots ! It is a national shame that such lovely creatures are wiped out for no other reason than the fun of shooting. In my days growing up in Paphos I would shoot birds with my catapults on a daily basis. I was ignorant and wasnt made aware by the then environment , schools , churches , elders etc that such cruelty was unbecoming of a young boy growing up. Now at 61 , in two days time , I sit in my study watching the little birds feeding on my bird feed and derive such immense pleasure. To listen to them singing is pure bliss.

In the UK it is the sport of the gentry , including members of the Royal family. Stag hunting is the noble sport and so is fox hunting. The tourists coming to Cyprus from the UK , MOST TOURISTS ARE FROM THE UK , are well conditioned to the hunting activities taking place in their own country so I do not think that it will have a negative effect on tourism .

If you want to increase the bird population then you need to reduce the huge amount of cats that are on this island.

There is a distinct lack of birdlife and lizards here and cats are probably the biggest reason why.
