Kafenes i need to put you straight on a few things......
1/ game control in cyprus is so strict i have seen "hunters " on areas signposted as prohibited shooting areas, most signs being shot full of holes anyway. Some of the birds you mention are protected species anyway and it is illegal to shoot them.. and who shot flamingoes on larnaca lake??

1-Just because you saw someone with a camouflage outfit in the fields does not mean they were hunter hunting in restricted area. Did you actually see them shooting birds in a restricted area???? I am sure not!!!
I mentioned 'filikoutouni', explaining to devil the reason why there are getting less (because mainly of the crows). The other two species, 'trigoni and chukor' are not protected species.
2-Yes, shooters are encouraged to shoot the quota of Kangaroos as the damage they do to the farmers and their crops are devastating. I might even add here that they even shoot wild horses and camels from helicopters as they are a great threat to farms as well.
3-Please show me the article (by this eminent birdwatcher) which says Cypriot hunters slaughter Turtle Doves.
4-As the author of this thread who has also studied Icthyology (which I don't know what it has to do with this subject) and at the ripe age of 63, I wish you would do your homework better before posting such threads.

I think i know what a 12 bore shotgun looks like, i have owned a few in my time -
you also mentioned blackbird and thrush..they are protected species.
what about the flamingoes?
If you could also check my original article..i said it was shown on BRITISH T.V. do you watch it?
No mention of the dogs abandoned by hunters??
your reply is selective and somewhat arrogant - i was bought up to respect other peoples point of view. it does not seem that you were.

My homework is done in the wilderness amongst wild animals throughout the world and my age gives me the experience to remember what was once commom and is now rare. mainly due to mans interference.
where have you gained your knowledge kafenes?
If people cannot bring a resoned debate to this forum and have their say without being sneered at then the forum is failing in the very thing it was set up to do.

@BOF

Just a typical hypocrit really. You owned a few 12 bores, what for pea shooting ? No don't tell me you only shoot clay targets !!! B#lls is what i say.

You say in you post ' i was bought up to respect other peoples point of view' yeah, like hell you do. My point of view is i like to hunt, so because you don't you have nothing but criticism for people like me. My point of view is nothing, you hypocrit. I think the avarage cypriot has sacrificed enough for the europeans and their qwangos, leave us alone. Go use your efforts to stop the USA killing innocent people in Iraq etc etc.

And oh, BOF next time you go to the wild (wow im so impressed fishman) just get eaten but a friggin lion or something and leave us in peace to do our hunting.

And just before i forget, frek the british tv, they have only shit to say about cyprus and only say what suits them.

I never mentioned that you do not know what a 12 bore shotgun is, so stop stirring things up.
you also mentioned blackbird and thrush..they are protected species.

There is a legal shooting season for these birds, december right through to february. Didn't they mention this on the 'British T.V. ???
If you could also check my original article..i said it was shown on BRITISH T.V. do you watch it?

No I don't watch British T.V. but I have seen very responsible shooters on Cyprus T.V. Do you watch it???
what about the flamingoes?

What about the Flamingoes?? I don't recall hunters shooting flamingoes. If there was a case or two, it doesn't mean all hunters out there go round shooting flamingoes. The same as just because most girls in cyprus strip clubs are eastern european doesn't mean all eastern european girls are prostitutes, and because some british girls get drunk in ayia napa and screw around with every cypriot guy they see doesnt mean all british girls are sluts.
No mention of the dogs abandoned by hunters??

Go to any animal shelter in cyprus and see for yourself how many of the abandoned dogs are hunting dogs. Cypriot hunters pay anything from 1000 pounds to 5000 pounds for hunting dogs, I don't think they would be so stupid to abandon them.
where have you gained your knowledge kafenes?

30 years of wildlife hunting around the world, Until I gave up 6 years ago because now I refuse to kill for sport. I have been shooting clay targets most of my life. In my younger days I was in the top 15 Australasia wide and a safety officer in one of the best shooting clubs in australia.
If people cannot bring a resoned debate to this forum and have their say without being sneered at then the forum is failing in the very thing it was set up to do.

Your thread has nothing to do with debating."roll up roll up for the great turtle dove slaughter" It is an open insult to Cypriots and if that's the attitude your gonna come to cyprus with, I suggest you stay where you are. We don't want your type here.
I think I have covered everything.

I MENTIONED THE SHOTGUN IN REPLY TO THE ABOVE STATEMENT AS THE HUNTER WAS CAYYING ONE.
I mentioned 'filikoutouni', explaining to devil the reason why there are getting less (because mainly of the crows). The other two species, 'trigoni and chukor' are not protected species.
I MENTIONED THRUSH AND BLACKBIRD BECAUSE IN MOST OF THE E.U THESE ARE PROTECTED SPECIES...MAYBE CYPRUS HASNT IMPLEMENTED THIS LAW YET...LIKE THE EURO?

I DO NOT BELIEVE THERE IS A REST HOME FOR RETIRED GUN DOGS IN CYPRUS......

[b] IN REPLY TO PANTMANS POST I HAD SHOTGUNS AND YES I ONLY SHOT CLAYS...I SHOT FOR THE ARMY CLAY TEAM FOR A WHILE....KAFENES. I WAS ALSO QUALIFIED TO RUN A MILITARY RIFLE RANGE. I QUALIFIED AS A MARKSMAN IN THE FORCES. I WAS A MEMBER OF THE BRITISH SMALL BORE RIFLE ASSOCIATION. I HAVE REPRESENTED TEAMS AT BISLEY. but i have never gone around killing animals.. rather i support many animal charities. I do not insult Cyprus as it seems to me that there are a lot more Cypriots on this thread with comments than "foreigners" but perhaps their comments are valid. I only see you and pantsman defending the hunters.
I own property in Cyprus because i want to and because the people where i live are really nice..they are Cypriots, so i will still be coming to Cyprus with or without anyones blessing.
PLEASE DONT BOTHER REPLYING TO MY POST AS I WILL ALSO TAKE NO FURTHER PART ON THIS FORUM. IT APPEARS TO ONLY BE FOR CYPRIOTS TO INSULT ONE ANOTHER.
I apologise to the decent people on this site.....goodbye.

There are some very nice 'foreigners' on this forum, especially British who I have tried and helped many times. There are also some very nice foreigners who have chosen to live in this beautiful paradise, and a beautiful paradise it is because of the mentality and culture of the Cypriot people. What I cannot stand is some whinging pom who thinks he can change the Cypriot way of life to suit himself and ruin the country like he has ruined his own.

Kafenes, Cyprus will have no bloody birds left soon. From what I have seen the UK bird population is not being obliterated by shooting as it is in Cyprus. I agree that historcally birds were shot to supplement diet but it's not necessary these days. I live in the countryside, the place is alive with birds, this year even the sparrow population seems to be recovering but the house martins that used to nest on our wall have disappeared completely. As you probaly know martins are migratory birds, they are "intercepted" somewhere on their journey (Spain I think). Wildlife throughout the world is under pressure, we should not be making matters worse for "fun".

Couldn't agree more Jerry, that's is why I stopped shooting 6 years ago as I found watching them much more enjoyable then shooting them. What upset me with BOF is the way he put the subject, ridiculing Cypriots in a smart arse manner. And regarding your comment in another post that 'Cypriot hunters shoot anything that moves', I think you should think well what you post before you post it.
