The fair was launched with opening speeches by the UN Secretary General’s Special Representative for Cyprus – Chief of Mission Michael Moller, the American Ambassador Ronald Schlicher, the UNDP Action for Cooperation and Trust Director Jaco Cillier highlighting the important role civil society plays in bringing two sides closer.

Speaking to reporters at the event, the UN Special representative Michael Möller expressed his optimism over the 8-july process, and stated that the difference of positions between the two sides’ was much narrower than believed.

He said the two sides had reached common ground on a wide number of issues since the process was first launched 15 months ago.

Stating that the two sides were willing and determined to continue the process, Mr. Moller also expressed his view that important progress will be achieved soon.

He added that the UN Secretary General Kofi Annan and the United Nations Security Council supported the process.

Answering a question on the latest proposal on the process presented by the Turkish Cypriot Side, Mr. Möller said that this was not true and that discussions and evaluations on the process were continuing.

8 NGOs from the TRNC are also participating in the fair which will remain open until Saturday.

The fair will feature exhibitions, workshops, panel discussions, presentations and live music.

Findings of the Civicus Civil Society Index Survey will be discussed at a symposium to be held within the framework of the fair.
