Cypriot logic!

I was motoring along peacefully, minding my own business, when I saw a sign showing the way to the Cyprus Marine and Fisheries Research Centre. Nothing wrong with that - it would be quite normal to see that anywhere between Ayia Napa and Paphos, wouldn't it? Zygi actually springs to mind as the ideal location. But, no! It's situated at Strovolos, just a stone's throw from Athalassa which, as the name suggests, is the community farthest from the sea in Cyprus.

That's so the Ministers don't have to drive too far in the morning.

Of course it does. You need access to what you are researching. Would you put an astronomical observatory down the bottom of a coal mine? The UK Freshwater Research Institute, now with new name, is on the banks of Lake Windermere and their Marine Research Laboratories, now the Dove Marine Laboratory, are at Cullercoats, on the coast of Northumberland. Both require vast amounts of water and also have a large area of fish "cages" outside the building in lake and sea respectively, as well as pumping facilities.

How can you have such facilities as
Main aquarium - Open-plan aquarium with flow through seawater system. Intake in Cullercoats Bay just outside the Laboratory. Wet bench facilities supplied with seawater and air allow individual tank experiments to be accommodated.

Deep water tanks - offer a water depth of 3m with continuous water circulation.

Mesocsosm - Large scale experiments can be set up in mesocosms in the main aquarium. Available mesocosms measure 2m in diameter and 1m high.

Environmental cabinets designed for small experiments which require the control of temperature and photoperiod.

Closed seawater system (2000l) with temperature (3-20°C) and 24hr photoperiod controls.

if you're 40 km from the sea?

FYI

The DFMR has its headquarters in Nicosia and three District Units located in the coastal towns of Paphos, Limassol, Larnaca and two subunits at Paralimni and Latsi. Moreover, there are in operation two research stations at Meneou and Kalopanayiotis, which specialize in research and development of marine and freshwater aquaculture respectively.

Your theory is based on the assumption that the specific building is used for the research itself although it may just be of an administrative or other support nature.
