The Republican Turkish Party MP Ozdil Nami, who represents the TRNC at the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, has pointed out that Turkish Cypriot MPs had received invitations from the Council of Europe soon after the 2004 referenda in Cyprus.
He stated that the Turkish Cypriot MPs was enjoying all the rights the other members have, except the right to vote.
Speaking on Bayrak Radio today, the CTP MP said that the latest report issued by the Council of Europe criticizes the Greek Cypriot Side’s rejection of the Annan Plan and the continuation of the international isolation of the Turkish Cypriot People.
Referring to the quartet meeting that took place among Turkish Cypriot, Greek Cypriot, Turkish and Greek MPs at the office of the PACE President Rene Van Der Linden in Strasbourg, Mr Nami said the meeting was held in a positive atmosphere and that the opening of a crossing point at Lokmaci, the inclusion of TRNC universities into the Bologna process and the water purification facility in the Haspolat region were among the issues discussed during the meeting.
He noted that parties attending the meeting agreed to co-operate on these issues.
Making an evaluation of the period lived after the rejection of the Annan Plan by the Greek Cypriot Side, Mr Nami reminded that the European Union had welcomed the Turkish Cypriot People’s approval of the Annan Plan and took decisions to remove the international isolation of the Turkish Cypriot People and added that the EU has yet to honor its promises.
‘The EU prepared three regulations for the lifting of the international isolation: These are the Green Line Regulation, the Financial Assistance Regulation and the Direct Trade Regulation. The first two are being implemented and now it is time to implement the Direct Trade Regulation’ he said.
The CTP MP stated that the economy in the country has been developing since the 2004 referenda and that foreign investors were more interested in the TRNC as they saw the Republic as a country coming closer to the West.
In conclusion, he said that the PACE President Rene Van Der Linden sent him a personal letter, in which, he stated that a rapporteur appointed by the Council would be sent to Cyprus to prepare a report on Cyprus and that President Mehmet Ali Talat could be invited to Strasbourg to address the PACE General Assembly.
