According to a report by television station NTV, US officials have said sending troops to the island could relieve Turkish Cypriot concerns after the two states on Cyprus were reunited.
“The US can remove this anxiety of security by deploying its troops in the island and provide extra guarantees,” NTV quoted US officials as saying.
As reported in the NTV coverage, the US sees Cyprus having a strategic importance due to its proximity to the energy basins in the Middle East, Caucasus and Africa and the could also serve to safeguard the outlets for the Baku-Ceyhan energy corridor.
Washington is already discussing boosting its presence in Turkey, making further use of the ncirlik airbase near Adana.
The US would also seek to be given guarantor status on Cyprus, according to the NTV report, thus creating a political base and also raising the possibility that Washington could be given a place at the negotiation table for the forthcoming Cyprus talks.
I can't and don't believe it!
