Happy May Day! :D

And aaahhh yes Niki...May Pole dancing...takes me back to my school days, skipping round that may pole with my school uniform on...so many memories...

Actually I read somewhere that maypole dancing goes back to pagan times and it's got something to do with fertility..I guess you can see how that works..

Lena, how can I put this without hurting your feelings?

I'll try in layman’s terms... Every time I come across another one of your posts containing all those itty bitty characters accompanied by your lovie daffy messages I just get an overwhelming urge to reach out for a barf bag.

So you chose to read only some of my post ha...I am sorry that I will disappoint you but things are not like you want to present them... for example...in the Cyprus problem...I avoid emoticons and I usually use some of the faces that the forum provide us...just to show when I am serious and when I am joking....usually when I talk about politics and I am serious I dont use them at all. I will not deny that I use them a lot and I will not deny that I posted in the Cyprus problem section as well...but I do that when I am joking or just messing around...not when I am talking serious and present my views. Do you deny that I can talk serious? But why that thing bother you so much anyway...I mean why emoticons bother you that much? Also ... you change your post every time you talk to me. First you was bothered because I dont express my self like that in real life (like you really know me), then because I talk with strangers with that way (like you dont), then because I express my self with love, then you are bothered because I use emoticons, then because I am young....bla bla bla...find what bothers you exactly and then we might talk. Oh I am sorry I forgot you are not interested to talk with a young lady...I am not equal to you! I am so sorry!

And if you need that much the barf bag you have to check if you are pregnant or not!

Get in line! Did you wear a cowboy hat and boots (and I'm not being kinky!)?

No No! This was English country dancing.

For those that do not know what English country dancing is.

How gallant I looked

How we really looked and the face of the dance in todays terms. Fat middle aged women and strange men.

Zan, there is another side to you - I was thinking you were all dashing and like Darcy (yum) but no???

I got bored half way through the second one, did the man with the ponytail massacre them all? Would have been more interesting!

Darcy has got nothing on me in tights. (We were only ten years old when we did it. Cute ahhhhhh!)

You should have watched the whole second dance. You have no idea what you missed. The woman at the front in pink started to eat the others one by one. She then coughed up that pony tail as a hair ball.

Oh I can imagine that Zan...

I find a video of May pole dancing, and the description I was talking about..interesting reading I have to say...

The most well known symbol of May Day (1st May) is the maypole. The custom of dancing around the maypole is an ancient fertility rite, which is still performed today on village greens and at spring fetes.

The origins of the maypole hark back to ancient times when tree spirits were worshiped and indeed the first maypoles were tall slender trees, usually birch, which had their branches lopped off, leaving just a few at the top to be adorned with garlands and blossom: a far cry from the more elaborate designs of today.

The maypole itself is a phallic symbol representing the planting of the god's phallus into the mother earth's womb, there by illustrating the bringing forth of new life. In addition some maypoles are painted with red and white spiral stripes in much the same way as a barber's pole and this too has sexual meaning: the red representing the female menstrual blood and the white the male semen. The sexual symbolism of the maypole and all the immoral revelry that went along with it led the Puritans to out-law the maypole custom in 1644. However, this prohibition was soon repealed after the restoration of Charles II in 1660. Many towns and parishes erected permanent maypoles in celebration, some boasting 80 or 90 feet! These permanent poles were left to stand throughout the year but only decorated and danced around on May Day.

Dancing around the maypole was once a very merry and frivolous affair, yet today's maypole dancing with its colourful ribbons is a relatively modern dance, only dating back to the nineteenth century. However, this new adaptation is now accepted as a very important aspect of the maypole dance. By taking two ribbons and weaving them together the dancers make a new element, thus two makes three representing the sexual union and the offspring.

This is a 'may pole' where people dress up and hold on to coloured ribbons dancing around the pole (no more rude comments please ) for May Day celebrations.

Believe it or not, this is taken very seriously!

I remember doing this myself when I was little.

Niki I am sorry if I offended you...I take it serious as well...but why you do that on May Day? Is like celebration of the Spring?

I used to do it a lot when I was younger as well...and to be honest I used do that in nursery school with my children when I used to teach back home...is not that bad to have some fun and to be a child for a while...right?

Lena not at all, you would never offend me. :)

The first day of the month of May is known as May Day. It is the time of year when warmer weather begins and flowers and trees start to blossom. It is a time of love and romance, when people celebrate the coming of summer with lots of different customs that are expressions of joy and hope after a long winter. A May Queen is crowned with flowers to add to the festival.

Niki

It can also be associated with the Well Dressing. Villages that had wells also used to dress the well in flowers the patterns of which can be very complicated. The chosen May Queen and her retinue then parade through the village usually on what is called a float. (open wagon)
