greece and turkey negotiated for us, and reached an agreement.
makarios was informed and agreed to all significant points of the agreements. the objections he raised in london wouldnt have affected the core of the agreement.
Absolutely correct. The Zurich agreement was the best that could be achieved and indeed it was the only agreement that our leaders should have done their utmost to preserve. The mere fact that the agreement specifically excluded the union of Cyprus with any other nation was in itself a poignant inclusion. The territorial integrity was to have been guaranteed by the three guarantors , alas it wasn't. One nation was ruled by psychopaths , another by a bunch of loony left and the last , the invader , by a nationalistic expansionist army run government . The Zurich agreement was not as Cyper says forced upon us. Grivas was against the agreement , but then only one solution would have made him happy and we all know what that was.
In all , the culprits were the fanatics on both sites those that still see Cyprus as an extension of Greece or Turkey. The realists amongst us with the interest of our future generations at heart know that there is but one way forward . A peaceful Cyprus where not only the dominant communities participate in all walks of life , be it politics, sport civil activities but also the many new minorities now in Cyprus.
