Actually no! Before EU entry Cypriot wine was cheap and best used in cooking. After EU entry the prices seem to have risen but the quality remains mediocre (at best). Buy something from the new world instead!

If you like un sirop de vin (which I don't!), Commandaria is supposedly good, but that's a question of taste. If you are talking about something a tad better than plonk, then you would be hard put to find one. I know of one wine grower who produces an acceptable medium quality wine at a correct price, but his name is a state secret because the demand is far higher than his production and I want to ensure continued supply. But a really good wine? There is none that I know of.

I bet that 69 c bottle was called El Tenorio. I was very pleasantly surprised by its quality: easily on a par with local wines selling for 3 quid or more. Unfortunately, my local supermarket sold out before I could stock up.

The nicest and most reasonable red I had in Cyprus was a Chilean Merlot. This was aroung £3.50 in supermarkets.

The only Cypriot wines that were ok were white.
