Exercise gets tangled up in the politics of the Cyprus Problem
20.04.2007

International Civil Defence Exercise disrupted by Greek Cypriot efforts

An International Civil Defence Exercise organised for the second time in Northern Cyprus has raised great interest. The importance of Civil Defence was mentioned during the seminars and visits before the exercise and the exercise organised in the evening was also a spectacle that drew great public interest.

Despite the hindering attempts of the EU Term Presidency Germany, about 200 scientists and representatives from 36 countries including Germany, the US, Japan, Britain, Switzerland and Bulgaria attended. Many scientists attending reacted to the fact that politics should become tangled up in a scientific activity.

The attendees heard 24 lectures and 26 presentations in 4 sessions during the conference, which started on Tuesday, about national and international coordination, cooperation and humanitarian aid in natural disasters and extraordinary situations. A Japanese scientists’ presentation accompanied by a cine-vision demonstration was the session with the greatest number of attendants.

According to the Turkish Hurriyet newspaper, EU Term Presidency Germany sent a note saying: “We do not recognize you, you cannot send invitations to EU member states” to the Turkish Cypriot side. The UN, that had once presented a plaque in thanks for the selfless humanitarian services offered by the Northern Cypriot Civil Defence team for their efforts in the Pakistani earthquake, sent its members a written statement saying, “We gave the plaque by mistake, do not attend the conference.”

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, centred in Geneva, which gave the plaque to the Turkish Cypriot Civil Defence team in thanks for their attendance in search and rescue operations for 17 days and for their extraordinary effort during the Pakistani earthquake in 2005, announced that the plaque and the letter accompanying it was given by mistake and sent all its members a written statement asking them not to attend the meeting in Northern Cyprus. Thomas Peter, UN office Vice President, in a written statement that he sent to members said, “We gave the plaque and the thank-you letters rewarding their operations in the Pakistani earthquake accidentally. It has no validity.”

Greeks demand for notes not completely successful
According to the Hurriyet news, the Greek Cypriot side announced that they had demanded that the EU Term Presidency Germany and the UN send the ‘do not attend’ letters and admitted: “And yet, we could not prevent the attendance from being so high.” The Greek Cypriot Alithia newspaper announced the news as: “We are again looking at the event after it happens, we tried to prevent it, but 36 countries attended.” Christos Kiriakidis, the Greek Cypriot Civil Defence Organisation president, said, “We evoked the UN and the EU in order to prevent attendance at the conference. Yet, the activity still took place.”

How the hell do you give a note and a plaque by accident.

44 views and not a single comment. Too ashamed of your governments antics or you just could not give a shit?

36 countries still turned up against the wishes of the great Greek propaganda machine though.

I posted the same article here http://www.cyprus-forum.com/viewtopic.php?t=10713 and yes there was hardly any real critiques from the opposition!

Infact, typically, it was only Piratis who quickly jumped in with his copy/paste bs!

Silence speaks pretty loud and clear i say....

I guess people are sick of saying the same thing over and over again, dear Zan...
Whether I like it or not,or you like it or not,TRNC is not recognised by the UN or the EU...The internationally recognised government of Cyprus is doing what she can to stop the TRNC from taking part in any international activity recognised by the UN and/or the EU.They cannot afford to be sentimental about this point which the RoC government sees as vital obviously. Why do you keep rubbing it in? Try to put yourself in the "other" side's shoes...Would you be acting any differently???

I honestly believe we would Bir!

Their strategy is not "the only way" to go by at the moment, but it suits them pretty dam well since its Turks who are on the other side, these people are not after peace they are after punishment!

Nobody replies to these posts anymore because there is nothing really to discuss. What do you really expect people to say? Tell you a big bravo for your attainment?

Here it is then: Well done.

Will you now stop complaining and moaning about the RoC fighting its corner and against any form and kind of direct or indirect recognition of the pseudo?

What?!? I thought this is what we are here for, moaning and complaining about each others fight for "their corner", why is it only moaning when we do it and an "interesting read" when GC bitch about the Turks by posting lame news articles?

No no, actually, when are YOU people going to stop moaning about the TCs who are fighting for their freedom?!

Only through assimilation with the winners can you save your community from extinction Shah. You are "Turkish Cypriot" when you stand next to the "Greek Cypriot" and don't ever forget that. The trick to your survival and prosperity is to follow and get along with those you are running away from.
