After some effort my son finally managed to place a map on my mobile phone to use in conjunction with my bluetooth GPS gadget. Now he can scan any map and put it on the phone. The trouble is that the town maps we have are too large to be scanned in one go and thus it will be very time consuming to scan them in parts and then join them up. Does anybody have any maps of Cyprus in electronic format?
For those who are wondering what its all about, here is a summary:
A GPS stands for "Global Positioning System". There are a number of satellites revolving above our heads and sending signals simultaneously. The GPS gadget picks up these signals and by measuring the time difference from each satellite determines the position of the gadget on earth by trigonometric calculations.
These gadgets come in different forms and prices. The simplest ones simply determines your coordinates and draws the path you follow or points out the distance and direction of any given "waypoint". The more sophisticated ones can be loaded with maps with street names and even places of interest. Thus once you input the street name it can navigate you to your destination.
Mine is a simple GPS gadget which connects to my mobile phone through bluetooth i.e. wireless. My phone is the type which can be loaded with various files and software. Thus I can use my GPS together with maps on my phone.
