The problem dear VW is that the Bases are a mutual agreement of give and take. One of the partners of this agreement is taking but not giving so what do you recommend Cyprus should do?

ask for more rent

Let us remind our selves of the enormous financial benefits that Cyprus derives annually , and has done so for many years now from the British connection , be it the bases , the British residents , the huge contributions made by over 250 thousand British Cypriots , advantageous employment by the Bases of local Cypriots , the enormous revenue generated by Restaurants , Clubs , Bars etc etc. The Cypriot economy would collapse overnight if the British took their trade elsewhere. I believe that tourism alone from the UK amounts to over 60 % of total visitors , and ask any shopkeeper , Restaurateur , business man and the answer is the Brits SPEND .
Let us also bear in mind that Britain is the home of more than 250 thousand Cypriots.

This situation is what's commonly known as a red herring - the government isn't making any progress on getting the Turkish Cypriot community to integrate into the ROC so they're pointing some fingers to divert pressure.

Politics as usual.

Hang on a tick there Miltiades, you’re getting everything mixed up in your haste to give credit to the British! You need to go back and explain each of these “sources” CLEARLY please. I’ve numbered them to make things easier for you.

The Cypriot economy would collapse overnight if the British took their trade elsewhere.

How long did you say you’ve been away from Cyprus for?

I believe that tourism alone from the UK amounts to over 60 % of total visitors,

What has this got to do with the Bases?

and ask any shopkeeper , Restaurateur , business man and the answer is the Brits SPEND . Let us also bear in mind that Britain is the home of more than 250 thousand Cypriots.

And how is this relevant?

either way you look at it the fuckers should pay rent coz it ain't their land. the roc is a sovereign country, a member of the eu, the days of freebies is long gone.

or

the roc should demand an equivalent piece of land in the uk to do as she pleases. and let the roc return the benefits to some villagers somewhere in the uk.

I agree pitsilos

The British should pay the rent owed from 1965 or get out

I've expressed my views on the forum before on this subject

The land could be far better used by the cypriot community
