Rembetika music originates from the refugees that came over from Asia Minor especially Smyrna/Izmir,. They brought over their own style of music and slowly it developed into the Rembetika music we have today due to other musical influences I believe...

I recommend watching the documentary Free-Cyprus, it tells you all about the origins of Rembetika music....:)

They settled on the Aegean islands first and then they had to refuge over all the world coz they had been treated badly by the mainland Greeks as if they were Turks :? and they were named ''Tourkosporoi''
Rembetika is like Reggae for Asia Minor victims...the only gun they had those years :(

Isn't that how it always is unfortunately? :(

It's a very sad story, being refugees and then not really being fully accepted into the society you sought refuge in...but it's not only sad for the ethnic Greeks who had to leave their homes, but for the ethnic Turks who had to leave their homes as well...:(

I could be wrong but I believe that some Asia Minor refugees also settled in Cyprus, my cousins grandmother's family come from Asia minor...
