Thousands of ordinary people on both sides of Cyprus welcomed with joy and relief the demolition of the divisive wall at Ledra Street. For decades it has functioned as a symbol of hatred and division between the two communities. This why, its demolition filled the majority of the Cyprus people, Greeks and Turks, with feelings of optimism, and as a step towards peace and reunification of Cyprus.
On the morning of Saturday 10th March 2007, the "Initiative for the Opening of the Checkpoints" organized a musical event at the end of Ledra Street to celebrate this important event.
While the event was in progress, a group from the extreme right wing "Chrysi Avgi" (Golden Dawn) and "EFEN" (National Voice of Greek-souled Youth), completely provokingly, tried to invade the event with blue and white flags and banners with two-headed eagles, shouting their known slogans "Good Turk a dead Turk", "Cyprus is Greek", "There is not Greek - Turkish friendship as long as there is Turkish invasion". With raging intentions they attacked some participants of the event. It was obvious that their effort was to create conflict and to disrupt the event. (more)
