CHANNEL 4 WARNING :

Postby miltiades » Tue Apr 17, 2007 11:14 pm

Channel 4 warns British prospective property buyers in occupied Cyprus BE WEARY .
The Brits were given a stark warning in tonight's Chanel 4 Property programme to exercise great care in purchasing property in the Turkish occupied North Cyprus. The stark warning was given in very concise terms.
The Brits who will ignore this warning are , at the most the uneducated , ignorant of realities English peasants mostly who , apart from being absolute ignorant of the political situation do not even know or care for that matter , on whose property their money is invested up on.
Good luck to the cheapskates , one couple paid 38000 pounds , money they can ill afford to loose , and yet these ignorant Brits with fingers up their arses still queue up to buy cheap , back of the lorry goodies .! Cor blimey mate !!
Serves them right fucking idiots .

Of course you can -- and BBC / ITV -- etc

How else do you think the Brits keep up with the UK soaps.

I am surprised at you. I have always read your posts with great interest and always viewed you as a true Cypriot.

The programme only really said what the UK foreign office advice was. However it is very harsh to call people who buy in the north, in particular English (British) peasants. Let me ask you can you afford to lose £38000 and not blink an eye?

For the record there is no one queing up to buy properties in the north, you just have to drive about to see the amount of half built houses etc. If a buyer looses money because they have bought something that doesn't belong to them then more fool them, however the programme highlighted the dangers of buying property abroad not just in Cyprus. There are developers in every country who take money off unsuspecting gullible Brits. The programme went to the couple who bought the house in Brittany, France who have been shafted by 8 builders. Even the south has its problems, was there not a story about a lawyer who ran away with almost a £1 million of clients money?

From what i saw the programme just said the facts of buying in the north including how the Annan plan sorted property disputes which led to a mass of investors in the North only for the plan to fall at the final hurdle. The programme could have been much worse for the north, there was no mention of the Gary Robb- Amaranta Valley saga.

Thanks stuballstu. I was beginning to wonder if I had been watching a different programme. Just another opportunity to take a cheap shot at the Brits!

There is very little interest in the UK for buying in the North since the issues have been given so much publicity though you will always get those who will take the chance and not only from the UK!

Those who bought in the past were ignorant of the politics and were also probably lied to. My brother went to look at a property in the North and was explicitly told that the property had deeds pre 1974 and was Turkish owned land.
What they didn't know is that he is married to a Turkish Cypriot who could read and understand the documents so she was able to tell him not to touch it with a barge pole!!

The Brits have been ripped of for years now in Spain with time share scams , most are naive and regardless of how many times warnings are given they still go ahead and get taken to the cleaners.
For your information the Chanel 4 presented was not quoting Foreign office warnings but commenting on the pit falls in purchasing disputed land in Turkish occupied Cyprus , words that he used to describe North Cyprus.
All on the forum know me as a staunch supporter of Britain and the West , and also know that I'm British and fly the flag , when however criticism is due , then I , just like you , voice my opinions. There are many many Brits that are utterly ignorant of world events and none more so than those investing their hard earned money in an area considered internationally as Occupied by Turkey. The question of deed legitimacy seems not to concern them , they are what I described earlier suckers.

I dont want to get into a disagreement or arguement with you, I have too much respect for what you write and your opinions to do so. You are one of the few Cypriots who just want to be Cypriot not Turkish or Greek.

What the Andrew Oliver said was that he advised against buying a property given the "political uncertaintity" in the North. He also went to say that the authorities in the South viewed such transactions as illegal and had in the past arrested people. Here is what the foreign office website says

Purchasing Property

Before purchasing property anywhere in Cyprus you are strongly advised to seek qualified legal advice from a source that is independent from the seller.

Property issues are closely linked to the political situation. There are a number of potential practical, financial and legal implications, particularly for those considering buying property in the north. These relate to the non-recognition of the "Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus", the suspension of EU law in northern Cyprus, the possible consequences for property of a future settlement, and the many thousands of claims to ownership from people displaced in 1974. There is also a risk that, as a result of the disputed ownership of many of the properties, purchasers could face legal proceedings in the courts of the Republic of Cyprus, as well as attempts to enforce judgments from these courts elsewhere in the EU, including the UK

I think you will see that they are almost the same thing.

The presenter did however go on to say that he advise people not to buy in Northern Cyprus due to the political climate. It was very little to do with the shoddy builders or sharp practices. He made it sound simple to the couple that all they had to do was take the builder to court and get their money back. If only it was that simple

You are right. There are suckers among the Brits but there are a lot of other nationalities who have bought land in the North also. Maybe the Brits are too trusting? I don't know. We only hear about the Brits. Mainly because we all understand the language. What about the Russians, Germans etc who have bought land in the North.

I know also that there are Brits who couldn't care less about the moral rights and wrongs of things but that is the same for any nationality including the Cypriots

I also agree with you that many Brits know nothing about world events. The pace of life for most of them is so fast that they are too busy trying to live a life and get on with things in the UK without worrying about whats happening thousands of miles away and if the media in the UK do not report on things then people will not know.

I have learned a great deal since relocating. I still love the Cypriot way of life and the Cypriots themselves. The Island is great but there are flaws that you don't see even if you come three times a year and there are things you do not understand until you live here and have the time to talk in depth about issues.

I am glad you are a supporter of the Brits cause I do get a bit fed up with the Brit bashing. The Govt is another matter. BASH AWAY

Any Brit who watched that program and still bought property in the north would be stark raving mad. All the cheapskate carpetbaggers deserve to lose their money, like the mugs we saw last night - serves them bloody right, I hope the TC lawyers now stitch them up with huge legal fees.

If it looks too good to be true then it probably is, caveat emptor!
