Do you agree that since just about all the nations on this planet referred to themselves as:

British from the name of the land they are occupy......Britain
Americans from the name America
French from the name France
Russians from the Russia
Hellenes from the word hellas.........and so forth..........

we....Cypriot People should be calling ourselves CYPRIOTS from the word CYPRUS. (the island)

Instead of... Turkish Cypriots or Greek Cypriots which refers to Turkey's and Greece's nationals living in Cyprus?

Constructive and civilised comments please!

Going quickly back to the original thread - Britains most definately don't call themselves British. The people of England have this word indoctrinated into them and feel guilty about calling themsleves 'English'. However Scottish and Welsh are adamantly 'Scottish' or 'Welsh' - not British - and why not??? Good thing to retain your heritage.

This happens all over the world. Some cultures simply get on with their lives together better than many Cypriots. Time to get over yourselves and move on. Never forget - learn from it but move on.

There are four distinct countries in the British Isles and I agree that I am English first and British second

Australia was populated mainly by the British yet they do not call themselves British Australians. They have more pride in the country that birthed them. They have drafted out a new culture for themselves away from mothers apron strings.

Birthplace

Postby aussiedrillerman » Wed Apr 18, 2007 7:09 am

I was born in Australia and therefore call myself an Australian first and foremost.

aussie aussie aussie oi oi oi

However most of us who are not aboriginal to Australia have some sort of "connection" to where the ancestors came from.

In my case its Irish - which we tend to make good use of on St Patricks day. :D but I don't call myself an Australian Irishman

But if you talk to people with Greek connections then they call themselves Australian or if from Turkey its Australian

If the conversation continues further at this point then they will tell you where they either came from or their parents etc came from.

If I were born on Cyprus I think I would call myself a Cypriot.

Since almost everyone agreed that limassolean is more or less correct about the issue of CYPRIOTS being calling themselves CYPRIOTS FIRST.

I have a suggestion to make.

Can we form an association of the true believers (CYPRIOTS) ?

Can we pursue this as a main stream movement to educate people about this very important issue.

Anyone who disagree with the associations aims obviously he or she should not be members.

what are members here think?
