This is confirmed by photos taken by John Thomson and subsequent book "Through Cyprus with the camera in the autumn of 1878".

In one of the photos there are two little back kids playing along the St Sofia walls. The caption among other things says... "Two boys figure on the right, the sons of negro parents, who not many years ago were slaves in a Turkish household".

My dad told me he had a black classmate when he went to the Gymnasio school in Nicosia when he was there in the early/mid 50's.

I have also seen a few black Cypriots in Cyprus speaking Greek. I have also seen many black people in Greece speaking very good Greek. Many of them before came before the influx of migrants from Africa and were of the Orthodox faith.

Some crazy person in the other forum said that the black people in north Cyprus were there as they were ancestors of slaves who the Ottoman empire supposedly saved from slave ships - total fairy tale lol. They were decendents of Ottoman slaves themselves.

Lastly, can I just say this post is a bit stupid - you cannot say that ALL Greek Cypriots or Turkish Cypriots are racist or not racist. The ones that ARE racist usually stand out more than the ones that arent.

Years ago in London my dad, who has since passed away, arranged for a TV technician to come and look at a problem with our Phillips TV. The man that showed up at the door dressed in the standard Phillips overalls was black and the first comment my dad made in Greek was "Isia ton mavron ebepsan mas touti?" (Roughly translates to "Couldn't they send a white guy?") and the black guy replied in perfect Greek "En entaxi kyrie Kosta eimai tsie ego dikos sas!" !!! (Translates to: "It's ok Mr Kostas I'm one of your kind too!")

Talk about wanting the earth to open up and swallow you...

Thats right - my dad also told me that there were a few Greek speaking black Cypriots who were born in the army bases in Cyprus. One parent must have been from a British colony in the West Indies or Africa. They grew up in Cyprus and learnt to speak Greek.

My dad said in the early days of the Sunday Cypriot Football League (KOPA) in London, there were a few of these guys playing and speaking perfect Greek.

I never said all, and I know that there are exceptions to every norm.

It didn't enter my mind, though, that Blacks from (former) British colonies were also sent to Cyprus, however it sounds quite credible to me.

It's just that I struggle to imagine a Black-Cypriot relationship in Cyprus. Do any of you know of any Blacks who have married Cypriots? Or any children of a Black-Cypriot parentage? How are these people perceived in Cyprus? I know of a (fairly) famous Black-Cypriot footballer - Colin Kazım-Richards - whose mother is Turkish Cypriot and father is Antiguan.

Most of Cyprus's Black population resides in the north, and I have heard from a Turkish Cypriot that three of his cousins are all married to Jamaican men. Can any such thing be heard from the Greek Cypriot side?
