Why do Cypriots own chip shops in England?

Feel free to talk about anything that you want.

And not just any potatoe! Anyone who lived in the UK in the 50's 60's and 70's may remember British spud buyers waiting (perhaps they still do) for the Cyprus crop to arrive at the green grocers.

Cypriot fish and chips, I've eaten and enjoyed em all over the world! from a mobile catering van in a cold wet miserable muddy Hampshire field to an oil well drilling station airfield canteen in the summer heat of the Libyan desert.

As a Cypriot neighbour said of Arradipou "All Fish and Chip Houses", never worked out if he was being envious or admiring?

Many Cypriots who came to the UK before WW2 settled in London's Soho. At that time, there were many Italian restaurant owners in that area who were selling up to move to outer London and subsequently sold them to the new Cypriot immigrants to the area.

Um...I haven't seen one Cypriot fish and chip shop up here..We have lots and lots a Chinese ones tho..YUM..Chips and Gravy PLEASE :D and where I live..Is fast food central...Lots of kebabs and pizza shops..MMMM..I should be fat haha. But I don't think it has ANYTHING to do with liking spuds, or being second nature realistically..It just happens in the UK you need degrees and qualifications for any other kind of work..and food are the easiest to get. yea baby. x

I do KNOW about it. And as far as I am aware..I can talk about whatever I want. I'm entitled to my opinion, just as you are entitled to your opinion. But until you learn how to spell, keep your idiot comment to yourself, it makes you look rather stupid.

Every street wouldn't be the same without one.....but why?

Probably the main reason is that a chip shop can be run as a family business (specially if they live on the premises) and they wont have to employ extra staff and pay out wages..
I have some relatives who used to run chip shops, father, mother sons daughters ..they all had to do their share of work for the business..
