FAMAGUSTA WANTED BACK

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

FAMAGUSTA WANTED BACK

Postby PENPOINT » Sun Apr 15, 2007 11:01 pm

I have noticed this:-

FAMAGUSTA – CAMPAIGN

Under the slogan “Let’s give voice to our city”, the refugee Municipality of Famagusta began a campaign to collect signatures by Famagusta refugees demanding that they be allowed to return to the fenced off town.

In a speech at the ceremony at the occupied town’s Cultural Centre in Dherynia village, Mayor of Famagusta Alexis Galanos said that “today we begin a campaign for the return of the town of Famagusta which is deserted and we refuse to become accustomed to this picture. We want Famagusta to reign once again”.

“This great injustice violates UN resolutions and especially resolution 550 and high level agreements”, Galanos said.

He called on all people of Famagusta to come forward to sign to give the town the power to promote the issue everywhere and especially before Europe”.

Galanos said that before any more chapters in Turkey’s EU accession open, “the big chapter of the return to the city of Famagusta should open as well as the right for our refugees to return to their homes”.

In his address, Mayor of Athens Nikitas Kaklamanis who is in Cyprus for the Famagusta cause, conveyed the solidarity and support of the people of Athens who “want to unite their power and voices with that of the people of Famagusta in the struggle to bring back life to the town of Famagusta”.

He assured that Athens will continue to play the role of the mediator at international fora, because “we cannot tolerate any further delay from any side”.

Signatures will be collected from today and thereafter from 21 designated places across the island. Eligible to sign the Declaration are Famagusta citizens aged 12 and over. Refugees residing abroad are also able to sign online at www.ammochostos.org.cy.
The campaign will end on 22 April 2007.
AND MY QUESTIONS ARE:
Will the signatures be enough?
Will in the same manner the 8000 signatures sent to 10 Downing street from the TC open the flights to the North?
Is the visit of the GREEK mayor of Athens helpful to the GC the same way Turkish FM Abdulah Gul's visit was helpful to the TC causes?
Why doesn't the newly elected Mayor of Famagusta take the Turks to the European Court?

From what I know I don't think Famagusta will be given back for now. Not till some sort of negotiations begin on the Cyprus problem. I'm not an expert on Cyprus but from what my mum has told me she thinks Famagusta WILL be given back to the GC's though it's going to be used as a tool by the T/TCs to reach a solution...

Sorry but that just sounds like a ransom to me.

You just realized that? The Turkish army is keeping the whole occupied areas as a ransom.

Negotiations under conditions of blackmail can never bring a lasting peace. This is why I believe there is no use in negotiating anymore.

Yeah, sometimes I get the feeling that the only other way we would get our homes back is another all out war.

Not necessarily a war. However what is true is that when somebody gains something from you in a war he will not come to hand it back voluntarily because he has problems with his conscience or because he was convinced he is wrong.

Propaganda circles in the EU started calling Famagusta a tourist resort. :!: Something like the home of a few distant villagers....

We need to show it's not at all something like that. It is the home of 50,000 refugees.

Those signatures might not be enough, but certainly they are better than nothing.

No, one asks that people be allowed home, the other one asks for help in promoting the theft of homes.
